Scotty's Customs wrote:It will probably be fine but run a little lean, take it easy for the first tank. If you still have the o2 sensor feedback the ecu will tune the low end its self anyway. Your tuner should just run the fuel map a little fat for you.

I will nearly guarantee you will never put petrol in again once you try e85. :)

The stock ecu should handle about 30-40% e85 before throwing a fault, probably an o2 code, but I have no Subaru specific cases, just going by how other modern ecu's react.

Problem with the gen4 32 bit ecu is that the o2 sensor's range is not efficient enough to tune by in open loop

I personally wouldn't risk it - hence my issues with my back up ecu lately...

E85 is a faster flowing, more dense fuel. Therefore if your engine is tuned for e85 and you have say 10 litres of 98 fuel left when you fill up e85, you will run lean.

Conversely, if you had a little e85 fuel left and filled a full tank of 98, you will run rich
[/quote]
I think you got that the wrong way around.

I have added 5 litres of 98 to my e85 tank on many occasions, to help with winter cold starts. It will only run a little rich. My suggestion is to invest in a wideband if you don't have one already, it's the most important gauge in my dash.

Where has this information come from? They have never switched over in 2 years, why would they start now? It's still 8 degrees in the mornings down in Melbourne...

More E85 stations just keep popping up around VIC.... :)

I have updated my list on:

Will try to ring around more places to confirm they actually do have them ....

Hey Guys,

Not sure if this has been asked (almost sure it has somewhere) but is it possible to have dual tunes for BP 98 and E85. Not sure if this is even a good idea in most cases or not.

What would in my case would I use to switch back and forth and what sort of issues may there be? Are most cars able to do this without piggybacking ECU's etc?

Sorry these maybe noob questions as I have heard some things but if they are understood right or given incorrect information.

Thanks

Yes you can have two different tunes, one for P98 and one for E85, and can load them to your car using ECU Flash on a laptop and something like a tactrix cable. It's usually better to drain your tank completely (as well as your reserve tank) before filling up with the new fuel but some people don't mind as the ECU can adjust itself for minor changes in the fuel for the first tank (a bit like getting a bad batch of fuel).

One disadvantage is the life of the ECU is reduced everytime you reflash it but it can apparently take a shit load of reflashes so not that much of a disadvantage.

There is a tuner who is working on a way to have the tune loaded to the SI drive settings on post facelifts....this would be VERY interesting if it comes to fruition!

Rough As Guts:

1/ upload <-> download your desired tunes via tactrix setup, lappy and some software ( but you would need to keep emptying your tank properly between switching )
2/ have a tune with a patch installed so you could run e85 AND or fuel without option 1 ( kido matt is working on one atm ) meaning you press a couple of buttons on the dash and it enables / disables certain values, tables etc etc..
3/ you really need to know what you are doing ( get a wideband, measuring your octane ratings between changing fuels, observing running lean or rich, LV shots, logging etc etc, )
4/ this is why people get a flex fuel sensor with a aftermarket ecu to make the changes happened in real time safely...

bit more involved....but like I said....rough as guts...

PS is there any news on when we will be getting more pumps in Sydney? I've only got one in Kirrawee and Heathcote, Heathcote is a little out of the way for me and the Kirrawee one is out of order every few weeks!

Sorry....and good luck!

This is why Scott at the beginning of e85 birth in VIC got a pump and nozzle and stored E85 in drums.....
