Chances are most Subaru's have the odd phantom knock here and there... it's just as soon as I put the tablet on I know it's there, and can't help but try and make it gone! Ignorance was bliss :)

I checked in with the OP to see if this had been resolved.

It turns out a contributing factor was the inlet manifold to TGV body gaskets being old, perished and cracked.

That equates to a partial or intermittent post throttlebody inlet leak, subject to both boost and vacuum conditions.

Iirc, this issue is even more common in colder climates due to an engine being subfrozen then started and run at temperature, meaning the inlet manifold gaskets are subject to massive temperature related expansion and contraction.

See if this thread rings any bells and post a log of the issue :)
