Will an extra resonator reduce exhaust drone?

Postby sssyco » Sat Jun 07, 2014 8:28 am

Still trying to work out how to quieten my exhaust a bit (have full xforce tbe) to reduce drone when cruising on freeway. Went to the local exhaust shop and they want $160 to supply and fit an additional resonator (hot dog) in the system. Anyone else done something like this ? Wondering if it's worth the effort or if I should just put stock mufflers back on :?

hot dog resonator does shit fark all.....better approach would be to install a long wide body muffler - and yes it does fit under near neath in the centre area....

another option is to install a varex muffler in the centre also...then you have the best of both worlds....loud or stock

I have got this setup: oval mid muff and it works great.

A third option is a side branch resonator to tune out the drone.

It's a tuned length closed end pipe t'd off the front or rear of the mid pipe.
Around 3 or 4' long.

Or 2x shorter pipes off each muffler :)

So do I remove the existing hot dog resonator and put in a oval muffler in the same location? I'm assuming straight through type muffler?

I just had this done on mine today, Magnaflow straight through glass pack muffler and reused the original (tiny) resonator. What a difference :o , much much deeper and more subdued at lower rpm and then roars when you step on it. Mine was a bit raspy and crackly before and it sounds so much better now.
See how it goes after a week or so for the final verdict though.

Seems i was given some bad advice when I was told an oval mid muff won't fit in there. Obviously they do!
Can someone help with dimension specs of what will fit?(9x4x16" etc). Also is it offset in/center out etc??
Which brand would give the deepest tone?
My car is 3.0 if it makes a difference..
Cheers

Well as far as I'm aware, the outback is virtually the same as the liberty so I'd say there's a 95% chance that you can easily fit a lengthy oval muffler in your centre pipe. I can't remember the length I got off the top of my head but I'd say it'd be the 26" as shown here as its the only one with a 2.5/2.5 inlet/outlet:

I'm happy with the sound, its quite deep but I can't comment on which brand is deepest.

Damn Dan, dat dere's a dang long damn dog dawg!

That's what you installed? I got the impression you had an oval magnaflow installed. Don't get me wrong, I was actually thinking of putting in a couple of 12" hotdogs m'self -or 'glass packs' (as the yanks call 'em), cause I was told, incorrectly it seems, that ovals don't fit..
Anyone got dimensions of a 'regular' shaped oval mid muffler that fits a gen 4??
Also, isn't the centre pipe 2.25???
Happy Friday everyone!

It's an approx 3-4" x 12" x 18" ish oval muffler with 3" inline inlet and outlet on our 3" mid pipes.

Not a hot dog, this replaces it, it really reduces drone and boom.

It's for raucous turbos mainly :)
