I'm kinda starting to think about things I can do to my automobile and two things I'm starting to want to waste my money on are wheels and mufflers.

Now, I'm not hugely knowledgeable about exhausts so pardon any silly questions.

At the moment I have a blank canvas.

One thing I don't want to do is go loud. I really just want something quite subtle and a very minor improvement to what I have now which, perhaps, looks towards getting more involved as I go if I feel the need.

If I get some mufflers which bolt on, does that mean I can literally get under the car, unbolt the old ones and put in the new ones? No need to take it to an exhaust shop?

Also, is a change of mufflers going to make the difference I'm after? Does it effect the sound or not so much? I'm guessing STi or Ultrex (I actually have very little idea about what these produce). I think STi will be a little bit more tinny sounding and the Ultrex a bit deeper?

Any recommendations or advice greatly appreciated.

I suggest an aftermarket dump pipe for better flow, THIS is where the power and economy gains are had
then Ultrex, STi or TCP mufflers to suit your tastes.
then an ECU tune to keep it safe and unleash some more power and efficiency

I have been thinking the same. I am planning on getting a kido tune.
Would it be stupid to get dump pipe, New mufflers and keep all the stock piping in between?
Where could you buy TCP twin tip mufflers?
I'm in Melbourne and have an auto specB 2.5 turbo Wagon.

Reading this thread: viewtopic.php?f=55&t=25702 I definitely think I'll start with just the mufflers and see how I go. Definitely don't want something loud, but want to dip my toe into the water.

TCPs seem the be the way to go, but at $650, they seem expensive.

"Bolt on" depends on which parts you buy.

For example, if you go a TCP dump pipe, an exhaust shop will need to weld in the "bung" for your front 02 sensor.....

Mufflers are normally just "bolt on".

But ...... most good exhaust shops charge reasonable rates, so it sometimes helps to have them do it - expecially if something is a little crooked

Where have you priced the TCP mufflers? Can't seem to find them.

I have an Ultrex 3" cat back at the moment with single tip mufflers. After the exhaust has truly carboned up and worn in, I find the sound is very subtle. I too didnt want loud and was apprehensive but I am finding my exhaust to be perfect in terms of noise. I dont find it drones at all and mines an auto. It just has that nice boxer burble at cruise that everyone wants.

Alternatively, just a muffler change will get you a similar note, but not quite as deep as the upgraded middle section of the exhaust.

I have an s/s 3" Invidia dump with cat on order and I have been told this will increase the sound of the turbo a bit. Hopefully not too much though.
