Subtle rumble - Not Too Loud!

Postby Encino Man » Mon Mar 24, 2014 10:20 pm

Hey guys,
looking for some advice on what to go with regarding exhaust/muffler set up etc. I have a completely stock MY07 3.0R and looking to get a bit of sound from it. I do not want it to be loud or droning, just a nice subtle note. I didn't know whether just mufflers might give that or exhaust system would be best.
Let me know what you guys have got or would recommend!!

Thanks in advance! :)

It's going to be hard/expensive to get the WRX note from the H6. With a nice centre pipe and a set of mufflers you can get a really nice sound out of them but its more of a Porsche growl. Have a search on the site and you'll find plenty of good examples. To get the WRX sound you'll have to get a set of custom headers made up and that's going to cost $$$. You can get some off the self models from Raptor or K2, the Raptors being the better bang for buck compared to the very pricy K2s but due to the even length design you won't get that rumble.

Thanks for the quick replies!!
Yea I thought that might be the case.. Think I might have to look into some headers and system then!

Thanks again!

This is how member Kiks got the Prosche growl from his H6:
TCP resonated 3" centre and 2.5" split to stock muffler flange location. Direct bolt in for you GT guys. $100 modification from an exhaust shop for 3.0 guys.
I think the resonated center refers to a hotdog style res, as opposed to a mid muffler...
Raptor headers might even improve on that setup ;)

The H6 is pretty quiet so the hotdog works well, whereas a mid muffler is a less droney option for 3" TBE on 2.5T.

I've got SS X-Force centre + y pipes and TCP Auto quads on mine, volume wise it's perfect, no drone, nice bass so you can hear it from 0-3000rpm, then opens up nicely (more like a howl) when you get past AVCS overlap up to redline.

Headers will significantly increase your volume and may increase drone levels (depending on your catback set up). Also, the type of cats you run will also have a big impact. I'm running standard and I would suggest this is one of the reasons why mine is not too loud.

If you're Sydney-based, there's a heap of 3.0Rs running around with various stage exhausts on them; you could see them first hand and see what your preference is.

Yea that would sound pretty good.. I guess I'm still trying to have a look at what other people are using on their 3.0RB as they will obviously give very different sounds etc than other models..

Alessandro, that sounds similar to what I'm going for.. Clips and videos just sound so different to in person.. I wish I did live in Sydney! Everyone seems to be based there haha.. Little Adelaide just doesn't have the same hype..

I'd get some mufflers first, see how you like em, then if you want more noise, you can swap out the centre/y pipes for bigger diameter items (i.e. XForce) for more volume.
