Over-powering Exhaust Smell

Postby peadya100 » Wed Nov 06, 2013 7:16 pm

I've recently noticed that my exhaust effing stinks!!

It only takes around 15 seconds to make our 14 car underground car park at our unit unbearable to be in.
Its not a rotten egg smell like some unleaded cars used to get, its just a really really strong and thick exhaust smell.
Its not blowing any smoke, and the AFR on idol is at about 14.5 so its not running rich. But that's actually what it smells like.

I had a thought that maybe my cat is dead as i bought the exhaust second hand.. but i doubt it??

Does anyone have any clues?

if the cat was buggered it would smell bad of rotten egg. how is your water and oil, it could be using either threw a buggered gasket. have you straddled any road kill lately? or have you had your exhaust handled recently with greasy hands?
Speed doesn't kill its the sudden stop that does.

Thanks for that.. definitely not the cat then.
I checked the oil but didn't check the water... whats the giveaway of a buggered head gasket? Is that when theres bubbles in the coolant?

So no codes thrown when you connect a scan tool to the ECU?

How recently before the smell was first noticed was the new exhaust fitted? Was there any other work done at around the same time as the smell started (if not exhaust)?

I've heard that anti-seize stinks when it burns off,if the exhaust was done and the O2 sensors installed (along with other nuts/bolts) were done with anti-seize, could that be it?

did you pick up something on the road like a plastic bag that's burning on your exhaust?

Mine has a really fumey exhaust as well. Really stinks like an old car. Can't remember if it was happening before the new dump pipe went on or not. It now just runs one high flow cat instead of the two.
