Mystery solved! Found this in the owner's manual (section 3-7) today:
NOTE (3.0-liter models only)
To protect the engine while the "P" or "N" position is selected, the engine is conrolled such that the engine speed does not become too high even if the accelerator pedal is pressed hard.
Guess the 3.0 liter engine is a bit of a wussy and needs protection by the ECU.
