UEL Headers guide for Gen 5 Libertys

Postby Gen5is » Mon May 27, 2013 11:30 am

Hey guys, I've been looking around for a reference to what fits on a Fifth gen Liberty and found the Russian guy's blog. I've just quoted this from the LGT forum.

LADIES AND GENTLEMAN,

After an hour or so of sleuthing i have stumbled upon the Russian man with the UEL headers on his Subaru Legacy. Sadly he has sold the car, but he has a blog on a Russian car enthusiast website, with pictures and information on the UEL header.

Without further ado, i present you, Mr. RB Man's UEL headers.

Some info:
2.5i Ej255 motor
(Im assuming, since its been imported from Japan, RHD)
Subaru Impreza turbo manifold
(It would help if someone could identify which year model these Impreza headers are)

It helps if you have Google Chrome web browser as it translates the whole page for you.

Just saw these pictures on the LGT forums, someone pulled apart the motor on a GT.

but it looks like its sad news for the GT owners. Completely different layout to the 2.5i, headers go straight into the turbo.

You could get custom UEL headers made up to give you that boxer rumble but you would also need a custom downpipe, intake and intercooler pipes made up to match the relocation of the turbo.
A lot of effort and costs to get less power :(

How much power loss would there actually be?
Are we talking 1-5kW, or 10's of kW?
Would it be possible to tune the loss out at all?

I suppose you could get some custom headers made up where you could add additional length of header pipes to one side of the engine. You may have to keep trying different lengths of pipe to get the noise right.
Any additional length of headers will increase lag and unbalance the exhaust.
Lots of mucking around and costs to get that boxer rumble sound.
