MY07 GTB 6sp dump pipe options 2013

Postby MY02B4 » Tue May 14, 2013 8:42 pm

Hi guys,

There's probably enough threads about dump pipes already which I've all read but the options have changed over the years and there really aren't that many options out there compared to a few years ago.

Ideally I would like an off the shelf item so I can install it myself with the help of a couple of mates and some beer.

I've done my research and tried to contact a few places and I've come up the following:

Phat dump - probably no longer made but would be pricey
AVO - available but online price is $950.http://www.avoturbo.com/avoshop/downpipe-ceramic-sports-5mt6mt-p-803.html
Ultrex - Have been recalled so no longer available
TCP - Tried contacting Tony via PM and email but never heard back
Invidia - Around $500 but might need to change steering knuckle
Xforce - Around $500 but will need a cat welded on

So at this stage it looks like I might just need to take it to the local exhaust shop which sells Xforce and get them to install it unless I want to sell my kidneys to pay for the AVO one. I've read that the MY08+ WRX Xforce dump fits the lib so does that mean all dumps made for the 08+ WRX will fit the lib?

Thanks

I had a chat to Michael (Phat) recently, and he said the biggest issue with getting one of his dump pipes is him having the time to make them.

I'm keen to get a phat dump for an MY09 GT Spec.B with 5EAT. I wonder if a few of us got together and asked for one, if Phat would take some time to make them for us... :)

Good job on the research mate, you've listed all the dump pipes I know of.

I went through the same thing last year and ended up getting the mild steel catless Xforce dump. It was $350 ordered through a local exhaust shop, bit cheaper than the $500 figure you have :) I'm pretty sure Xforce also offer their dump pipes with a cat, which would make the diy install easy.

As far as I know, all 08+ WRX dump pipes will fit the MY07 manual GTs.

Youve probably seen it already, but Here's the link to my dump pipe thread if you haven't

Thanks guys.

The Phat dump looks great but I dont expect it to be cheap. If you're wanting to pay that much then you could easy buy the AVO one and you wouldn't have to wait but it all comes down to personal preference. I've shot off an email to AVO to see if they can do it a bit cheaper because it doesn't look like their site has been updated for awhile.

Paggaz, yeah I read your thread and it was helpful. Looks like the going price for dump + cat will be around the $500-$600 mark depending on the steel type. I've shot off an email to Best Mufflers to see if they can put a dump + cat together so I can just bolt it up myself. Looking at the Xforce site, it doesn't look like they sell one with a cat which makes me think I'll most likely need to take it to an exhaust shop if I decide to go with Xforce.

Problem is that the 07-08 Libs are a bit old now and their wouldn't be a huge demand for them. I've been keeping an eye on the For Sale forum but not many people sell them unless they sell their cars so brand new is more likely at this stage.

EDIT - AVO responded to my email 5min after I sent it. Latest price is $800 + GST so it's still close to the $1k mark which isn't too enticing unfortunately.

Phat dump is about $950

AVO is $880 (your quote)

Xforce is only $295 and the cat options are in the drop down menu. The cats are bolt on, no need to weld. Not sure who quoted you $500 with no cat.

I saw that. When I said $500-$600, I thought the cat that comes as an option doesn't have the flanges but thanks for clearing it up. Seems like the cheapest option atm by a long way and if it's got flanges on the cat then it'll be easy to do it myself.

yeah its got flanges on the cat. if you search for "ES-SW08-CATB" on the site, you'll see that the cat has flanges already welded to it :)

Thanks mate, you're all over it. Tempted just to order it for the time being. I prefer the single pipe look but this will do the job. Not like there are any options at that price anyway!

Another cheap option if you want something a bit fancier than a mild steel xforce - second hand turboXS catless dump pipe $350 on rexnet. Has a cast collector like the AVO dump pipes, not sure why but there must be a reason behind it.

Not sure abt the cast iron but AVO is the only one with it so can't be that important. With the turboxs, it is priced similar to a stainless xforce after you add in the cat. Turboxs looks pricey though. Brand new they are 800 which seems expensive for something that's locally made unless they are copies of something.

You can have my brand spanking new TCP dump if your after one. I went for TCP, as it was the only dump option with a flex joint. Iv also used TCP in the past, and they are awesome quality.

Only selling as i sold my Liberty before i got a chance to install it.

Why go mild steel over stainless steel? Makes sense from a $$ perspective if you don't plan on keeping your car for a long time, but are there other reasons other than simply cost?

Apparently, stainless is more prone to cracking if heated and cooled rapidly. Also known to sound "tinny".
