STi/WRX widebody sedan catback onto 3RB wagz

Postby vaccine » Fri May 10, 2013 6:41 pm

Following on from Benny's lead in getting these mufflers for his GTB: viewtopic.php?f=55&t=19427&start=0&hilit=mystery

Well i may have just bought a complete catback with mufflers from a 2012 WRX to throw on the 3RB when the Raptor extractors arrive!
MSR was saying that these catback systems are good for 220atw on his dyno b4 they hit the wall. he has a system he was thinking about putting on his outback. lol
Be interesting to see what the exhaust note will be like once its all on there, and what sort of power can be extracted while keeping it quiet. 8)

youll find most of the gains will come from the headers/cat configueration as well as a change in note :)
but will be interested to seen how yours goes with the sti system

Interested to see results especially if the muffs have the correct spacing with the STi sedan y pipe.
I noticed from pics that the mid has a hotdog style resonator so it should sound great in conjunction with the muffs.
Definitely considering this serup as a future downgrade option.

Be interested to hear them with the headers mate.
Should have my pair late next week.
Will test fit them to see what they sound like and take measurements for getting the tips modded

Internal ID of wrx catback is .25 bigger in primary and in y pipes. Rotated the front flange 30 odd degrees centre hanger is bang on, extend the tips about 70mm and trim bumper slightly to fit tips. Still very very quiet, but there is an audibal note now! Extractor hopefully arrive early next week, so will fit and see what extra noise comes of it.

This is dle's set with un-modded tips and hangers that allow the muffs to sit around 1/2" to 1" lower in order to clear the small preFL sedan bumper cutout...
versus
My set with extendo tips and higher hangers that gave a nice flush fit in my postFL wagon bumper cutouts.

Both sets have the inlet flange cut, rotated, re-angled and shut to fit the stock Lib Y pipe or upgrade, a step you are avoiding with the WRX STi sedan mid...

bum dyno says better.. lol.. can hear the motor rev now.
wait till my Raptor extractors arrive and then throw her on my mates dyno and see what numbers she will make.

must say, twin 3" tips does look very very fat!

Hey dave.

Why didn't you stagger the tips?

My mufflers (the ones that used to be owned by dle above) arrived on Friday
just drilled out the spot welds on the tips and will test fit to my wags to check the pipe lengths required and see what other mods I need to do with the hangers.
hoping i can just use some shorter or custom rubbers to negate another move of the hangers

Robbks:
See above for my dle/BBB comparo pics: dle's hangers only need to be bent down 1/2-1".

So the tips came off when you drilled the spot welds???

Cheers, I'll probably just heat them with the oxy and bend them.

yep, just used a big drill bit that i've customised for drilling rivets and spot welds (much flatter angle)

Cool: pics of the tips and pipe ends please :)
The zorst guy I used didn't do that on mine so I'm intrigued by the possibilities...

will do
whoever re-welded the tips back on one of these mufflers should be shot though...

I just lined up the hangers with my stock muffs and where they are now is exactly the same so they will sit down as low as the standard ones, which will do for now to make sure the tips fit in the cutouts nicely, and i camn adjust from there if needed

i have a mate who works for beer who's a gun welder, I'm hoping for about 10mm protrusion from the rear bumper with 10-15mm of stagger.
