I don't use 5th until past 70km/h :|
Even at 80 I don't use 6th that often, there is no point. It's not going to save me any fuel and I won't be able to accelerate well without going down a gear first.

Right gear for the right speed. It's why you have 6 of them.

I agree with you but I think that's going to affect your engine way more than it would your drivetrain.

My bad, i should have written driveline (including engine), not drive train. Do accept my honest and sincere apologies :)

Thought as much. You're lucky I like your t-shirts. Anyway we're way off topic, back to dump pipes! :offtopic:

Haha slow as in geared down slow, not struggling slow :P

If the car can accelerate it's not under too much load and will be fine maintaining speed.

Agreed, hard to choose between 4th and 5th at 70.

Back to the thread at hand, seems like the vf52 is a direct bolt on from 09+ wrx. Estimated max power figures with one of those?

If you are going to go down the turbo route.. for $1600 you can get the blouch ball bearing turbo which according to MSR is a much better turbo than the VF52 and gets better power gains. If you are going to upgrade the turbo you may as well spend $300 more to get the best turbo possible. IMO anyway... thats the way i plan to go.... you should do it and test it out before i do it hahaha

I wish I had done the Blouch BB turbo over the VF52.
Early spool becomes very important for the autos but we all want as much power as we can over the biggest spread of rev ranges.

You should sell me your vf52 for a hugely reduced rate peter and you can buy the blouch haha

Haha, thought about upgrading it a few times.
The labour costs of swapping turbos and retuning make it an expensive exercise.

The spool rate could have been a bit better on the VF52.
Mid range and top end are good but I could always do with an extra 100kw or so.

The vf52s for manual would be ok spooling down low or still recommend blouch turbo ?

Mick from MSR says the VF52 is a really good turbo for liberties, he just says the blouch is better as he can get slightly more power out of it. He didnt say anything about spool times, but i would guess that the ball bearing turbo would spool slightly quicker??? But being a bigger turbo its still going to take longer to spool than the stock turbo obviously.

I have a VF52 installed. Tuned by MSR it produced 204 kws with a little heat soak.

On the road the performance is awesome as an upgrade over stock. At the time I paid $1050 delivered so a no brainer when making a decision. $600 cheaper than alternatives.

For a turbo that spins up a couple hundred RPM later over stock and holds to redline it's a good choice. Also the install sees only minimal trimming of the stock heatshields etc. On the street I like the lack of lag over larger options.

Things are slightly different now and the VF52 price is closer to the Blouch or Garrett turbo prices so a more difficult decision to make.

MSR prefers the Blouch and I'd trust his judgement as he's installed and tuned VF52s, Blouch and Garrett turbos.

I'm considering the upgrade to a Blouch at the moment only out of curiousity.
