xforce exhaust - mild steel vs stainless steel pros and cons

Postby circlethesky » Sun Apr 21, 2013 12:29 pm

Up until the other day I had decided on SS but in a recent thread someone mentioned that the mild steel would give a slightly deeper and less 'tinny' sound.
What are some advantages one has over the other?

That's what I've heard as well, sound is a little deeper.

Stainless Steel will outlive the car though, so that is worth considering if you plan on having it for a while. My exhaust is mild steel, but I've painted it with VHT flameproof so that should give it some extra protection.

Other than that differences are minor, stainless is generally thinner and therefore lighter but you wouldn't see a massive weight difference

I had actually read that before when I was researching exhausts but for some reason completely forgot about it when I was deciding between mild and stainless.
Think I'll go mild since it doesn't seem that inferior to stainless. cheers.

Does anyone have any close up pictures of the mild steel exhaust on their car? I've been thinking about this for a while and still haven't made a decision. I know mild steel sounds better but stainless looks better, I don't want to regret my decision.

How often do you look under your car to admire the shiny stainless? :?

I painted the stainless steel on my exhaust to prevent attention from the pigs. :assassin:

Sure it looks nice, but not getting pulled over is nicer.

When stainless gets hot it discolours anyway.

If you were looking into stainless steel for longevity reasons I'd consider stainless mufflers before the rest of the exhaust because all of the condensation is going to gather in the mufflers which means that they are going to be the first part to rust away.

All very good points, that was the push I needed to get rid the doubt from my mind.

One last question I promise;
I wanted the straight cut tips that are pictured on the xforce site but they don't sell them anymore, they come with the ones in the link below.

If I find some I like, how easy would it be to change the tips and would it be a huge change to the sound?

I went with the 3" stainless but mild for the dump pipe coz I was told it's less tinny. For staino to discolour it has to get pretty fucking hot.

As for the tips, I got my ones changed by the guys that put it in. $60 each I think it was.

I reckon I'll be going mild steel when the times comes. You gotta look at the time you will be keeping the car for. Mild steel should last 10 years before needing to replace anything. Will you be keeping your current car for 10yrs? Most wont.

Not just that I cant justify the additional cost of SS on a car I may not keep for more than 4 years. Spending the extra wont give any extra power. Id rather the extra coin go toward something else more beneficial. Making sure the MS system you get has mandrel bends and quality flowing mufflers is more important.

What tips did you get put on mumbles? Did they just replace them or was there welding involved?

Everyone's feedback has cleared all doubt from my mind, will be ordering them in the next few hours.
