Exhaust popping and Dump

Postby Newbie GT » Sat Aug 11, 2012 8:20 pm

Hi guys,

What would cause exhaust popping example when in neutral and give a slight rev as revs drops it pops very shit sounding!

Also on deacceleration on idle after slight rev I hear like a hiss or a suck kind of sound like near dump pipe but sooo hard to know!

Please assist if possible..

popping noise would be most likely due to excess fuel that has pass through the exhaust and hit a hot enough to ignite it again, mainly happen after the exhaust system is changed

temp fix would to reset your ecu and let it relearn the mapping

proper fix is to get a tune

This can't be a leak in exhaust ?

You will notice with a higher flow dump pipe a bit of a whooshing sound because the air is travelling through more freely. The crackle sounds a lot better on the outside of the car also, but I guess it's not for everyone. My car does it a bit because it's untuned so running rich and wasting fuel.

We might go to an exhaust place to get them to look over it!

Can a muffler cause this if it has a leak ?

It is highly unlikely you have a hole. Everything you have described is perfectly normal.
If you are really paranoid you could try this.

Exhaust popping and Dump

Will it cause any damage letting the car miniback fire/ pop? Or just chew fuel?
Now driving the mighty 86 :)

Running overly rich can be bad. Popping all the time might not be so good. If it is only when backing off suddenly from hard throttle lower in the rev range I would say not too bad, but I'm certainly no tuner.

Mine popped quite a bit after I'd had a few mods but before my tune. I still get some here and there.

I would like to know if an optimal tune should mean zero backfire, or if a bit is ok?

How many times do you want the same question answered mate?

An exhaust leak sounds like absolute shit and will make the car heaps louder. Look here for an example of ghetto shithouse mods. Known as the "Hog-zawst" mod. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF0mzmMkKTI

The crackle is the excess unburnt fuel being put through the exhaust which then ignites. This is because you have installed an aftermarket dump pipe causing the car to run rich. If you want it to stop running rich, you will need a tune.
It is advised to get a tune sooner rather than later to get the car running properly. Damage can be caused by not tuning the car for an extended period of time, but it's not guaranteed it will, depends on the mods and how the car is driven.

Tune has been done after dump hence questions regarding possible leak causing popping.

No worries I won't post anymore

So it took you this long to mention you had a tune.....after the first reply to your thread was to get a tune.
I give up.

If you very recently had a tune and you think there are issues I would have a chat to the tuner and get their opinion.
Assuming you paid a fair amount for the tune, if they are a reputable place they should be happy to chat about it.
