Exhaust modifications

3.0 options

Postby datcho » Sat Jul 21, 2012 4:56 pm

After sifting through a few threads i have learnt that when upgrading the exhaust a few people keep the two cats and delete the third one my question is has anyone tried deleting the two that are usually kept, and keep the one they usually delete? i hope this makes sense? I'm asking cause i saw this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdTXXBjz ... el&list=UL
and this person has no cats or resonator, i know its loud and probably illegal. but its just got me thinking :?

Performance-wise, it would be better like that but cops/epa etc would be more likely to pick up on it because generally cars of this era have a cat for each bank close to the engine where as MOST cars don't have a 3rd cat so unless the 5-0 know the particular model of car well, show em your cats in the secondary pipes and you're gold.

If ur gonna do it, run stock cats with straight pipes in them for the front ones and a real cat as the 3rd cat. That way you'll get the performance and a stock-looking setup. Make sure you get a decent cat like an HJS.

Best to remove all 3 and put two decent ones in between the 02 sensors.

The pipes there are atrocious anyway.

You've tried both options have you? Putting cats before the secondaries merge ruins a lot of the potential scavenging.

It's not an EJ20. EZ30 is equal firing (left-right-left-right-left-right).

Im trying to get the boxer/wrx sound out of my 08 liberty 3.0R B-Spec,
Does anyone know what's the best way to do this, by changing the extractors and exhaust system?
Need some help as I'll be honest, don't know too much about these cars as I've only owned it for a week xD

Why is that?
It's still a boxer engine ....

Ever heard a Porsche? Boxer engine :)

The WRX has an unequal length from the passenger bank to the drivers side. H6 is not capable of doing this :)

The engine configuration does not create the noise. It is the exhaust configuration that does it.

The 4 cylinder boxer engine has 2 cylinders in the same bank firing consecutively, as in left left right right. It just happens to be cheap and easy for Subaru to make an exhaust which is a tri Y with the 2 cylinders on each side joined together. You therefore get 2 cylinders firing one after the other into the same secondary pipe. If it was an inline 4 you could still build an exhaust system which did this and would make what you call the "boxer sound". Nobody in their right mind would do this as it is a bad, inefficient exhaust. But it is the cheapest way to put an exhaust on a 4 cylinder boxer engine, so they do it.

The six cylinder boxer engine fires left right left right left right, so combining the primaries into the same secondary does not create this sound effect.

According to my tuner (willall), going no cat has "minimal" performance benefits but will make you very defectable.

I've got raptor headers, 2x 200cell cats, xforce cat back (basically 3rd cat delete and massive hot dog resonator). It's pretty loud but good for a 15-20 pick up in ATW torque across the whole rev range
