1992 Liberty - Exhaust Mod Suggestions?

Postby SubaruTim » Sun May 27, 2012 7:28 pm

Hi All,

I have a 1992 Liberty LX and I'm looking for suggestions for an exhaust modification.
Given I have the sought after unequal length headers on my 2.2L 4cly I know I can get a bit more of a wrxi sound out of it but nothing too loud or obnoxious, just a nice wrxi rumble :P
Also, what would be the potential power gain by changing the exaust pipes?
Cost on a basic upgrade, i'm budgeting up to $500, doable?

Thanks for your suggestions in advance!!

$500 is about right for a Mild steel catback with Stainless muffler. You will gain very little power gain, if any at all with a non turbo.

Just go into an exhaust shop, I would be asking for a 2.5 catback mild exhaust with a resonator, and a 3 inch cannon rear muffler. It will give the WRX rumble and not be too loud under load.
Built not bought, it's a way of life.

I got away with a good quality muffler. You're not going to get any performance gain at all anyway. Junbl muffler from Exhaust Technology here in Adelaide and it was too quiet to start with, but once it bedded in and the carbon deposits built up, it sounds amazing. Good service and advice as well. Nice and quiet at idle and cruising speed, but really opens up under load. A very nice boxer rumble when revving at a stop as well. I'll post up a clip when i get a chance if you like....

Thanks Hamish, Dropz and Nottage,

I had a feeling there would be little power gain, oh well.

I love the sound your ride makes Nottage, it is *exactly* what i'm after!!!
What kit have you got and how much was it?

As it is my subi has to rev at ~3krpm on the freeways (100Km/hr) so I wouldn't be looking for noise until about 4krpm, what sorta noise do you get around 3krpm?
I know these two cars have different engines but it is probably worth a small comparison.

Thanks mate, i'm pretty happy with it as well. Beats my old system which was annoying no matter what RPM i was at.
It's the stock Subaru piping with a single tip Junbl muffler (I'm not sure who would sell those interstate as i know only Exhaust Technology stock them in SA. With the muffler and labor, it cost me $500. Bloody expensive muffler, but saved having to change the pipework etc for no real reason, and very happy with the note!

Same here, 3100rpm at 110km/h. This thing is perfect. I can barely hear it while i'm driving on the freeway (unlike my other shitty muffler), but when i accelerate from there is when it starts to rumble. If you can even use that word in the same sentence as a N/A 2.5L  The noise would be very, very similar from a similar engine, as i'm pretty sure the gear ratio's are the same.

Crusin/Mark

Could you give the brand of your modded exhaust (part # if avail) ?

I'd like something to last another 20 years

I'm tired of taking the Exhaust off my Gen1.5/2 to braise small holes in various parts of the pipe
