XForce 3" catback noise

Postby doppler69 » Mon Nov 21, 2011 3:22 pm

Hello all, I recently purchased a 3" strait-through cat back for my GT-B (MY07). I will start off by saying that I love the exhaust note when driving hard, however, it is quite boomy/loud for normal driving and the drone from the passenger seat (i.e. my wife) cannot be ignored. My question is, will changing the hotdog style resonator for a larger oval-style resonator decrease the low-rev noise? Alternative suggestions welcome.

resonators (hotdogs) won;t drop the volume by much at all.
But oval resonators (fibreglass or steel wool packed) will.

something along the lines of a 4"x10" oval, 16" long straight thru 3" in/out (a.k.a truck muffler) should drop the volume level nicely without impacting performance or altering the actual sound too much

I assume your cat-back system removes the big resonator at the front of the mid-section pipe?
that's where i'd be throwing in a 3" version of the stock unit.
the stock unit is actually a good unit
2" (maybe 2.5") straight through, perforated pipe and wool/ glass-packed.

Hi mate, I am a vendor for the x force exhaust gear on here. I often say to my customers that the x force mufflers are a very loud and free flowing muffler.

I always incourage people to either go tcp or varex mufflers over the STD x force ones.

About the resonator. Not sure where you got your x force center pipe from but the normal x force center pipe has a massive 4"x12" resonator on it.

Thanks for the responses. I got the system from HP-F in Dandenong and it has a hotdog responator on it (looks like about 16"). Would you say that the 4"x10" oval resonator will drop the volume more than that?

It should, but wouldn't be a whole lot. I would sell the x force mufflers for $400 and get some tcp mufflers as they are cheaper than varex's. Varex's open and close with a remote for those who don't know about them.

Installed a x force center and Y pipe to a 08 GT with phat dump and TCP mufflers last night. Sounded great and not to loud at all.

I have attached a couple of pictures which will be clearer than my semi-informed explainations...

Yep that is the x force resonator alright. I have never sold a system with the x force muffles as I always tell people they are loud and way to free flowing for general people wanting a nice sounding exhaust. Great if your going massive number (250kwatw) but generally speaking they are loud.

I always encourage people to get the tcp or phat mufflers, and if they want to spend the money... Go varex's for the best of both worlds, as loud and aggressive as STD x force mufflers when open, quiter that stocks when closed.

Thanks for that information, I wish I had spoken to you before hand, but nevermind. Are you able to tell me where I can get these TCP mufflers (you perhaps?). And you say the XForce mufflers should sell for $400 (a set?)

Tcp mufflers are in a vendor forum on here.

I would expect brand new x force mufflers to go for $400.

I wouldn't settle for much under that.

Would be snapping these up. $400 for a set of $800 mufflers.

Or you go louder. Then you won't be able to hear the drone (aka wife) at all :)

How do they become $800 mufflers?
phat quads were $550 Delivered to your door when new.
they're now second-hand, so that drops their value further.

Oh sorry, my apologies. The quick read I did on them was $800.

$550 is a great price for good mufflers

It's because those are mild steel ones

Sorry, which ones are mild steel?

Additionally, will the TCPs just bolt straight on to the XForce Y pipe or will I need to get modifications done?
