Exhaust system, worth it?

Postby oscar1407 » Mon Oct 31, 2011 8:30 pm

Hey guys just wondering if it would be worth buying a full exhaust system everything high flow all the best stuff etc.
im looking at a 1996 gx pretty much stock, if i bought a whole exhaust system if i did in the future do a engine conversion to a STI engine would that exhaust and heads bolt straight onto the new engine?

Im not expecting any significant performance gain for the 2.2 NA but i would want a exhaust that would make it sound good and benefit any engine i decide to put into it later on. i just dont want to waist any money on an exhaust system im going to have to throw out when i buy a new engine...
Also i want to get the exhaust for the NA because i love the boxer sound. Thats why i dont want to wait till i get another engine, because that could be years away.

Cheers guys :)

Maybe just do the cans at the back or somthing. The first half of the system is gonna be diffrent when you start putting turbos on.

By cans do you mean the muffler at the back?
If so how much would that cost?

if your going to want a new engine with a turbo ect down the track, then your better off with just mufflers for now, as a turbo engine will require a 3" turbo back exhaust and a NA will only need a 2.25-2.5",.

you could put a 3" cat back on your NA that would then bolt onto your Dump pipe when you get a new turbo sti motor but a 3" cat back on a NA is going to be so loud and defectable.

you best bet would be to grab a nice muffler for now to give you that boxer note :), a good single muffler in stainless steal should be around the $400 mark.

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone, but don't you need UEL headers to get the boxer rumble? Also, doing an engine swap from NA to an STi engine on a 96 GX, would you need to look at upgrading drivetrain components, fuel system etc? Just trying to think ahead for ya becuase I almost got roped into doing this sort of stuff on an 03 RS Impreza. The only advice I ever got was to buy a WRX.

true Tristan :), to get that wrx burble that you can tell its a wrx from before you even get close to seeing it you need UEL headers, personaly I really like the boxer note with EL headers :). *cough varex mufflers cough*

I can only judge from the video you posted, but I agree with Hamish the sound is not that great.
Maybe it's different in person of course.
