3.0r-b exhaust mod??

Postby acko » Fri Jun 24, 2011 1:42 pm

Hey Guys,

I just bought a My06R-B and what to get a bit more sound out of the exhaust.
I previously had a impreza RX which i had a straight thru cannon on, and it pretty much drove me insane. It was an auto and i know that they are more anoying than a manual, but i dont want something too loud.
Idealy it would be quite under 3 1/2 rpm and then wen u put ur foot down give a good noise. i also want Twin duel exhausts.
Would just putting a duel muffler on each side, with out changing the catbac increase sound? or is there a better way to do this?

cheers. :D

Check out this thread from another guy wanting to mod his 3.0

Look at the second post from Robbks on exhaust and tune suggestions.

I put a X-force cat back on my H6 last year and its great.
When you give it s&*t it opens up and the sound is pretty pure. To get the best results a tune is needed and the removal of the standard cats to help with the flow.
Personally I wouldn't change it, I previously owned a wrx with a pretty neat exhaust and I quite like the H6 sound.

have a look on here. a lot of them are on the turbo cars but you'll still get a rough idea of what you're after from the H6 ones on there

"""replace the front two (one in each exhaust runner) with high-flow versions and delete the rearmost one all together.""

Doing that would very loud though wouldnt it?

no, as the stock MUFFLERS and the centre RESONATOR is still in place to reduce the noise.
this gives you 93.742% of any performance gain you can expect to get on the NA from modding the exhaust.
replacing the rear cans and centre resonator will have teh largest effect on volume.

that being said, i would expect a little sond increase from the better flowing cats, and i have noticed a slight increase in note at 300rpm+ on heavy throttle from removing the 3rd cat only.
at idle and cruise it is still dead quiet (too quiet)

i got quoted teh following
2x Redback Stainless Steel, metal Substrate Cats @ $185 each
then you need some flanges/ a 2-1 collector/ some pipe/ gaskets/ 4x o2 sensor bungs and someone to fab it all up
so budget about $500-$600 in parts and a couple of hours labour on top

yes it does sound expensive for really only doing the headers for a small increase in power/ note
but if you know someone with fabrication skills it can save a decent amount of cash for you

yep, the mufflers/ resonator and pipe size is responsible for the end note
bigger pipe diameter tends to give a lower overall note as it's all about how the sound waves travel within the pipe, bigger pipe allows lower frequencies to resonate more
and your muffler design and diameter inside it will accentuate or muffle the note it receives
