TCP exhaust w/ Quad Tip Mufflers...

Postby blacktop™ » Tue May 24, 2011 5:55 pm

Hi guys,

I've noticed that there has been a bit of interest regarding the exhausts/mufflers that TCP/tbear is selling so i thought I'd put this up to help people make their decisions.

I bought the exhaust about 8-9 months ago and have had it fitted since then. I bought it on the 'special' price TCP was offering as it was in the first run of the exhaust. I bought the full turbo back exhaust but sold the dump pipe as I already had a PHAT dump pipe.

Firstly, the good bits:
The quality is very good and the welds are excellent. All joints welded inside and out. It looks exactly as it does in the pictures in his threads. The tips look beautiful, it sounds great (it's not drony) and it bolted up quickly (catback - 30mins) and without fuss. Incase you wandering why the mufflers aren't shiny, its because I sprayed the whole exhaust except for the tips black. I got hassled enough by the pigs in my old car and I wanted to avoid that with this car.

Secondly, the not so good bits:
The passenger side muffler sat on the slightest of angles and even after about an hour of adjusting my mechanic and I couldn't get it sitting perfect. I'm not sure if this was just the case with my exhaust or if others had the same problem?

The tips are not suitable for wagons. I believe TCP has made the muffler tips longer than sedan STi tips but shorter than wagon STi tips so therefor its 'suitable' for both sedan and wagons. I would say its perfect for sedans but not so good for wagons.

To fix both of these problems I had in the muffler inlet pipe cut and rewelded at a slightly different angle so the muffler sat correctly and had all 4 tips chopped where they meet the muffler body and extended about 50mm. As it is now (see pics) it's still slightly shorter than wagon STi tips.

As the pics below show, the exhaust sits perfect and couldn't be happier. Sorry bout the average quality iphone photos :D

Cheers
Ryan

sounds like you are very happy with these ryan...

the tips look quite large actually, might have to measure my sti cans tonight and check the difference...

what are your impressions on the sound level, considering you have a full exhaust is it still understated when cruising..?

+1 to the list of potential mods...

I got a TCP system for my wifes 04 GT and it has the same issue with the LH muffler. Either the JIG needs fixing or they need to supply some wedge shims to go in where the muffler flanges are. Interestingly, I have also fitted a catback from another supplier to a 3RB sedan and it had the same issue with the LH muffler. I think I will chop the tips off and TIG some bigger ones on to rectify that and the shortness of the tips.

I fitted some AVO mufflers to a TBSTi sedan and they were a perfect fit and not to bad on price. Would be an expensive system once the dump/mid and branch pipes were added though. You get what you pay for though.

hi guys

The LH muffler has been re-jigged to sort out the slight tip issue, also the length of the tips have been increase by 3cm to.

Can you please let me know the length of the tips to suit the wagon blacktop.

Thanks and here are some more pictures

Alright boys I'll do it tonight...been super busy at work and therefor lazy as when I get home.

How should I do it? Put the camera on the ground a couple of meters behind the car and then rev it like a dickhead a couple of times? Lol

But seriously, is 2 meters good?

Sounds like a plan to me!

Oh and for how to do it? 2 meters or so behind the car? some mixtures of soft and hard revving I suppose so we can get a good representation?
Cheers
