Delete of standard mufflers

Postby Mat04 » Wed Jul 04, 2012 6:36 pm

Hi I was thinking today that I should just remove the rear mufflers on my outback and put straight pipe with a 3.5"tip on instead. Is there any mechanical problem with doing this or is it just sound related?

Generally yeah you should be fine. Mufflers are only there to quieten things down so if you can prove that your car isn't over the limit (90dB or something) then there should be no issues

I'm not really worried about the regulations but does deleting them increase the sound by that much?

Try it? Unbolt the mufflers and you'll find out

i've seen someone's car with no mufflers, but had hotdogs welded on, then the stock tips welded onto the hotdogs

i ran a round with no mufflers for a while. its not fuck off loud. it really wasnt all that bad a sound. just make sure you put a straight pipe on to finish it off. otherwise you might end up burning through your inner gards after a run up the hill.
It does open the flow up a bit aswell.

I've also heard one suggestion where you put about three washers in the last join just before the last muffler. It results in some of the sound coming out there - they say it sounds ok but I haven't tried it myself.
