TCP exhaust is on and car is kind off tuned.

Quality of TBE is great but if you have an auto wagon I urge you to really think about this as I am having big drone/noise issues

Cheers

Hi Jeff

I had the exact same problem with my wagon. I bought a full Invidia Turbo back 3 inch system which was of very high quality however the noise was rediculously loud and unliveable.

I kept my downpipe and sold the cat back component of the exhaust on this forum pretty quickly (to a younger member who wanted a loud exhaust :D ).

The rear mufflers are where all the noise comes from so putting the standard mufflers back on quietens it right down but doesn't take away the power gains (hopefully your standard mufflers bolt up to your TCP y pipe)

I'm now planning to buy a 3 inch centre and Y pipe that bolts up to the standard mufflers (probably X force).

Or you could try a second resonator or replace with a centre muffler to get less drone.

sounds like a good plan Jeff

You won't have any problems selling the TCP mufflers on this forum if that's want you want to do.

I had a little drone in a narrow part of the rev band with Phat muffs on a 3.0 NA auto but stock pipes for the rest of the system.

Anyone know if the drone with the TCP muffs is specific to those who have upgraded the rest of the exhaust system or just on auto's?

The auto would have a big part to play with the drone

The wagons are going to drone a bit more that the sedans. I notice that you are both face lifted cars. I believe they had unequal length headers, and get the WRX sound going on? I had a set of wrx headers on my pre face lift with a tcp exhaust, and it was very loud inside the car. Outside it wasn't too bad. I recently changed to a set of Kando equal lengths and it is sooo much quieter now it isn't funny. There is still some noise in the cabin but it was well worth the effort of changing for the reduction in sound alone.
Kinda flush. Fitment is something. ADM as F*ck.

Well I don't have TCP I have K2 gear and they are quiet in the cabin even when cruising on the freeway at 100-110km/hr, only really open up when I get into mid-high revs and even then you can only really hear them in the cabin at the highest revs. People on the street can hear it when it opens up though ;)

Yeah, the mufflers make the biggest difference to noise but the least to the power gains. A good ECU tune now and you'll be stoked.

Interesting this one, will be installing a TCP on a Foz XT manual and those that have installed have a quiet drone free result. It does have a res in the middle though. I do believe an auto changes it though.

Interesting you have decided to put the tuned by STi rears back on. Whilst I was deciding what Sube to buy, looked at and drove a TbSTi and the Y pipe looked slightly larger than the diameter of a straw ! Or did you attach the TCP Y pipe onto the back of the STi muffs ?

From memory the muffler has a 1.8" inlet. While most aftermarket has 2.5".

In theory the 1.8" dual pipes are smaller in total area than a 3" pipe, while the 2.5" is more than enough. But cutting off and wielding a 2.5" inlet to the sti quad won't achieve anything as its internal pipes are the same size anyway. Unless you proceed to gut it. In which case might as well keep the straight through mufflers.

I wouldn't mind seeing if there is any gain in having a funnel rather than letting a 2.5" y pipe slamming into a 1.8". But think the gain would be minimal.
