Rob Roy - Sunday Sep-27

Postby Ric » Fri Sep 25, 2009 3:11 pm

There's an inter-club hillclimb competition on at the Rob Roy Hillclimb this Sunday.
I was going to be there anyway to help with the timing, but I've decided it's time to give my 3RB a run up the hill to see what it can do :)
I've just managed to crack 30 seconds in the MG, so the Liberty should do quite a bit better.

Here's what I'm up against in the class: (the M3 managed 24.73 seconds in June)

(The Sprite is supercharged, so the capacity is treated as 1273 * 1.7 = 2167cc)

Anyone who's interested can pop in. There might be a small entry fee (only a couple of dollars).
How to get there at: http://www.mgcc.com.au/robroy/index.shtml (it's over the road from Sugarloaf Reservoir, where we did the cruise photos)

(adhar managed 25.94 seconds in his Liberty GT at the same event in June. Unfortunately he has family business on Sunday, or he would have competed too.)

Well it was a far from perfect outing for me, but I came second in class. :)

Everyone got one dry run, then the rain came in making the track wet for the rest of the day.
I managed to spin all four wheels on the start line on my first run, then shifted up to third too early, and chugged up the hill for a 31 second run.
I got a much better start on the second run, stayed in second till just before the rev limit, but needed to shift down to second going up the hill, and dropped it into fourth by accident :( (32 seconds).
The third run, I got a good start, and once I shifted up to third managed to keep the revs high enough to stay in third, although it was a struggle to stay on the track at that speed. 28.3 seconds, which was the second best time in the class. All the other cars were going much slower because they couldn't get away at the start. AWD win :D :D
(I won't talk about my 4th run. Suffice to say I selected another wrong gear :()

I'm now looking forward to see what time I can get on a dry track. I may get a chance at a club competition event on Nov-15. I'll probably run both the MGA and the Liberty :)

I've just received the official results. You can see that everyone else has crap times after the first run, except me ;)

That last column means I came 13th outright out of the 60 competitors that ran :)

I wondered if anyone would notice.
At $450 a tyre, I'm not risking my day to day tyres (or wheels) on this sort of thing.
That's a set of 17" Lib-GT wheels I bought from Torpedo earlier this year ;)
(They've still got the original Bridgestone RE050A 215/45R17 tyres on them, with about 40% tread left. The smaller wheels also give me slightly better gearing for this sort of stuff :D)

Reason: fixed the tyre aspect ratio

I thought as much. I'm seriously considering going back to 17x7 or 7.5 for everyday running to be able to take advantage of a less expensive tyre size and a better sidewall height. I'll probably end up with 225/50R17 when I get around to it

I finally received the CD of photos from the pro photographer that was at Rob Roy.
Note how far the car squats down when I hit "The Wall". I'm glad I haven't lowered it! :)
