Twilight racing at Sydney Motorsport Park

Postby macattaq » Mon Jan 27, 2014 2:30 pm

Just booked a date for this self-drive session in the Liberty GT. Any suggested air pressures for stock standard tyres?

What wheel/tyres size and what tyres are you running??

Any idea which track you're on?

How/where do you book this (link me?) I'm interested.

Generally if you're running road tyres, set your hot pressure around what you would set your cold pressures normally. i.e. I usually use around 35-37 psi hot on my Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

Michael, ARDC have a few member tracks days every month.
Full access to the pits, a number of instructors, no timing is downers...but there ways around that
They use all the track layout too.

Yes I know, friend of mine flags for the ARDC. I'm already booked for the GP Circuit on the 29/5. :D

But didn't know they did twilight events?

You should be aiming for the 6psi rule from cold when you come off the track hopefully you pressure has only risen by 6psi Running too low pressure, the tyre will overheat and and pressure will rise too high . I ran the 3RB cold at 32psi and 2 laps of Wakefield the pressure would rise to 38 and 40 on a hot day so my ideal was around 39 psi. Keep note of your lap times and the tyre pressure . You will notice as your lap time stable out your trye pressure will remain constant .

Twilight sessions are only during summer, they are also known as practice session, usually advertised only by email at short notice.

Session start at 4pm until 8pm i think.

Heading out for a track day in April, finger crossed can get a few more in this year.

Thanks for your replies. I had a great time and it was exactly what I expected. Only had 2 sessions of 20minutes. One session was a dry track. The other was wet, so that got a bit hairy. They cancelled the 3rd session due to oil on the track.
On the GP circuit, I was doing about 2min 10secs laps. (stop laughing!)...
I couldn't get up to my top speed down the straight - only 160kph.
Downsides:
The shudder and rattle in the steering under heavy braking was unsettling.
Having to be mindful of the cars in the rear vision mirror.
Using the daily drive as the car supports some conservatism.

So I had my afternoon track day at SMP GP Circuit on Thursday - was fun! :D

I did a few 2:01 laps which seemed about the best I could manage.
Top speed 204kph (actual).

I thought I would get some sub 2min laps as that was what I used to do on my motorbike consistently IIRC, but I guess not in the car. There was a bit of traffic at times so hard to get in a clear lap, plus I need to work on my lines/apexes which could be better. :?

I would have liked to have had FFS (flat foot shifting) for this day, but unfortunately I guess it is not production ready yet for the Gen V, as I'm still waiting for Matt/KiDo to get back to me (and no response from him to my e-mails or PMs - hey at least a "sorry it's not ready yet" would have been nice rather than a complete lack of response).

Anyway I took some video with telemetry for anyone interested.

Great videos Mick. I really enjoyed watching someone else in a faster GT getting down to the 2 minute laptimes.
My videos are crap compared to yours, so I won't post them. Anyway, who wants to see someone going slower?!

Factory power with light mods on PS4 tyres in Dec 2021
not a clean lap with a 2:02'7xx I think. Just came off a cool down lap so didn't pass the finish line at my top speed...

Aiming for more power late Jan and then hit it in Autumn.

https://youtu.be/d3w4S6fSZ38

Factory power should be easy to get a flat 2min.
