I notice Bunnings also sell cheap extinguishers too - similar spec for $22 and that's the "normal" price, not on sale.

So is there some glamour spec extinguisher available or are the power units good enough?

Powder is ideal for most vehicular fires. All AU/ANZ certified powder extinguishers will be fine (both Bunnings and Super Cheap Auto products are certified), however it's not so much the content of the extinguisher, it's the capacity. 1KG only does so much and it certainly wouldn't put out a full-on engine fire. It's designed to try and stop something from getting worse - if you catch the fire quickly, you run a very good chance of putting it out with a small extinguisher. A bigger fire will simply be slowed down, not stopped, but that will give you a little more time to attempt to remove trapped occupants in a given accident.

Powder is terrible on cars though - it gets everywhere, and destroys anything electrical/electronic it contacts.
CO2 might be a better option, but I don't know if you can get small ones?

The goal is to put out the fire, not have the best cosmetic outcome.

Someone trapped in a burning car? I'd dump as much dry chem as possible.

On a race track where I've got no insurance? Same.

Car burning in my garage about to set the whole house on fire? Same again.

Car on fire out of the open road? I'd call to confirm my insurance was in force, then let it burn.

Completed fitting to the car.

Got the Bunnings $22 extinguisher (has a tight grab on the neck of the extinguisher - no traditional wrap-around locking clamp) and some nuts, screws and washers. Drilling the holes and fitting the extinguisher holder was less than 10 minutes. Bolted to the car in 5 minutes.

Looks great but unfortunately it does interfere with the seat adjuster. Simply put, I need to have the seat all the way back and can barely move it forward two notches before it won't lock anymore. The above pics show the seat full back. Here is a pic of it as far forward as I can get it:

Overall still happy, but I think the extinguisher would better fit on an angle rather than flat, and maybe extend slightly further down, but then this would likely interfere with the hump under the carpet. Of course if my passenger seat was electric or didn't have a horizontal adjustment bar, it wouldn't be a problem.
