[CLOSED] -[Group Buy] Polk MM840" Subwoofer [US]

Postby Viper » Mon Jun 04, 2012 9:42 pm

Hello All,

My factory sub has broken for the second time, and without any real affordable local suppliers, I've decided to reach out to our more favourable US counterparts.
The recent dip of the AUD will not help, but it still makes things affordable.

Currently I've priced up '5' units and postage to Melbourne.

Current total price is $779 USD ($390 for the subs, $389 for shipping).

This puts the price per unit to $155 USD, (so ~$159 AUD).
This is shipped to Melbourne, so if you want the Subs shipped interstate, please allow for that additional cost. (I guess it would $20 - $40, but honestly, I have no idea).

If there is sufficient interest (and confirmations) I can see how much better the prices can get with more units.

Specs for the Sub (Stolen from Polk Audio);
Overall Frequency Response: 26-200Hz
Nominal Impedance: 4 ohms
Minimum Impedance: 3.3 ohms
Power Handling (continuous): 250 w
Power Handling (peak): 500 w
Efficiency: 90 dB
Voice Coil Diameter: Driver 1-1/2" (3.81cm)
Resonant Frequency: 35 Hz
Qms: 5.5
Qes: .7
Qts: .6
Vas: .54 cu ft/15.4L
Sd: 35.65 sq in/230 sq cm
Xmax (linear): .75
Le: 2.3 mH

Not too much info out there on the internets for reviewland, but word on the street and that these guys work great being underpowered.
Please do your own research before confirming.

I require full payment beforehand as the seller is only accepting BankTransfer or Western Union.

Please register your interest.
4 spots available at this stage, unless more get involved and I'll update the quote.
Looking to order ASAP

+1. Is a new amp required to power this?

Also have you received prices from dealers in AUS?

'stew07gt' has one in his Lib.
Stolen form his post;
"so the stock amp isnt powerful enough to 'punch' my new sub but im happy with it for now anyway. theres more low bass then the macintosh, it fit in the standard spot without spacers, was mounted from the underside. i chose a polk 8040db sub which is 8inch and fits in the stock location. was $230 fitted"

So that's all we have atm.
Hopefully he may put some additional comments.

But to be honest, anything is better ;p

the one i have is the DB series, not the MM which is meant to be dearer. the mm is rated at 250rms and the db at 180rms...

the stock amp wont power both of these properly. if your stock sub is starting to go and you want to keep your boot space, yes, this option will match and slightly better the sound quality of your system.

if your wanting to upgrade the quality or volume of the sound, i would say, get new amps.

The db range is also more budget than the mm range. Mm should be better but will like more power.
I had an older model equivalent to the mm840 and was very happy with it (and the 6.5" splits too). So I would be happy to recommend the speakers...
but I had it boxed, in a smaller car, with a dedicated amp, so not so comparible to ths setup.

I would assume it to be an improvement on stock though.

[edit] you beat me to it :)

haha all good rooby,

yeah i also have polk splits now, just off the stock amp. they hammer even off the mac. i had a polk 10 in my last liberty, but with a dedicated amp and it had a LOT more go than this 8 does.

still worth it though i think.

the websites "vehicle fit guide" does not state this subwoofer is suitable for out liberty's. Have you personally confirmed with the company that it will fit with our car? and will it be required to be installed professionally or is it a simple swap?

also are you aware of the price difference for the mm840DVC?

At that price i would be interested but i may also look at saving for an entire system, such as sub, amp and speakers if shipping will be so costly next time around.
and what about other sources such as ebay? not reliable?

if its 4ohm, and 8 inch. and shallower than the polk db840 i have in mine. then yep, itll fit.

its a pretty simple swap. mines using the stock cabling, could do it yourself.

also, the shipping cost is low and must be thought of in terms of combined cost.its still cheaper than buying it locally. Compared to what youre planning, an entire system upgrade (done properlyish) would cost from $1600 installed locally, and thats without a new headunit. (someone jump in here if you think this price is silly, this is assuming either a pdx5 channel or 2 seperate amps, a sub, splits, rear speakers + install).

Slight development which probably will cancel this GB.

Taking the advice from a few posts above I rang around locally too see what the prices are.
Turns out its ~$150AU without even trying to barter or drop multiple units.

Had a good chat with the bloke and it also turns out he uses the MM's to replace the shoddy Ford 8" subs in all the Falcons and never has any issues.

So, seeing as its this easy to get/source and essentially for the same price (factoring in postage), I'll put forth to cancel this.
Apologies to all those who got involved and excited, but it pays to do your homework ;p

Happy to still buy a few for those interstate and cant get a similar price, but I doubt they would be much more...
