I got given some as a present and just got around to installing them today. i followed the instructions and did find that the bonnet did sit up quite a bit. so i tried installing the struts in the opposite way so that the tube is attached to the fender part rather than the pole, if that makes sense. on mine i found it did make a noticeable difference to the size of the gap.

Is there anything wrong with installing them this way? ie will it damage the strut?

Cheers
Danny

Can you post any pictures?
It's an interesting way to install it. I might give it a shot this weekend also.

Here are the pics:

so the instruction told us to install the struts like

but i installed them
IMG_0704.jpg
IMG_0704.jpg (63.33 KiB) Viewed 4428 times

and the gap
IMG_0707.jpg
IMG_0707.jpg (43.35 KiB) Viewed 4428 times

compared to
IMG_0708.jpg
IMG_0708.jpg (48.92 KiB) Viewed 4428 times

What i found was that it wasn't only the rubber lining that was in the way, but the bolt under it was touching the tube of the strut as well making it sit higher. Not sure if installing it like this will cause damage to the strut in anyway, but it seemed to minimize the gap in mine, and it still seemed to function properly.

Personally I wouldn't be happy with either gap :/

Hmmm...the ball housing smashed on installation today on mine as well. Not happy.
Might look into a replacement part from repco or the like.

Do you mean the threaded part snapped like in my picture, or the actual ball section somehow broke?
I haven't been able to get a response from the manufacturer yet, so let me know if you find any replacements.
Also maybe give these people a try http://www.coventrys.com.au/coventry/di ... ntacts.htm

Group Buy for Bonnet Strut/Hood Damper

Postby Mr Cali » Sun Apr 17, 2011 7:20 pm

With a bit of adjusting I finally got mine to almost sit flush, about 1mm at worse. I also had to mount it upside down.

What worries me is that the kit is poorly made or aligned. If you close your bonnet slowly and watch the strut, you will see the strut body hit the inside of the guard and then bend as you close the bonnet further. The strut body is too big for the Lib.

Just flipped the dampers around as per someones suggestion above.
Gap is now completely gone!

I suggest everyone does this ASAP, it only takes 5 minutes tops.

Oh and also I have emailed the company again, am going to order 10 of the little ball ended things (assuming they reply this time!)
So if anyone else runs in to trouble at least we will have some spares.

After a few shower's and a pressure wash on the weekend I swapped them today and found this:

Image

After swapping them over the gap closed and big clean up and spray with Penetrol will hopefully stop this but still, rusting like a mofo in a few spots and only being a week old is not good.

Hmm... the early sign of rust is a bit of a worry.

Got mine fitted today and as far as i can tell looks like a perfect fit with nil gap. I did put them in upside down and as already mentioned earlier moved the rubber lining out of the way and its all good.

Now for the dumb question whats with the bit of grease and where/what are we meant to grease????

I would grease a bit in the ball joint and a bit on the rod itself where it slide into the strut on closure.

I'm pretty positive these sort of gas struts are supposed to be mounted the direction you're all flipping them to.
Piston side down... no?
The strut body/cylinder sould be marked to indicate this
