Td04hla is overall a better turbo, and shouldn’t require a retune.

What’s your symptoms?

Here’s blown turbo considerations:

You mean there is something worse than a TD04 turbo?

Yeah the bearing chra assy is so small that eg Rose Rage turbos won’t bother with upgrading them.

They do what they’re supposed to do, eg full boost 17 psi at 2800 rpm dropping to 12 at redline: peep the log of the gir tuned prefl wag.
Interesting stuff.

You really want to check for boost leaks & clean or replace your pcv, check banjo bolt filter etc before installing the replacement turbo.
Make sure you’re aware of turbo oil priming procedure too.

Or bye bye replacement turbo.

I can do most of those checks for you or any properly competent shop should be capable. Don’t just send it! :good:

Thanks mate, I defiantly had some boost leak problems and I will check the banjo bolt and remove the filter today.

I’ve managed to get hold of a vf38!!!!

Yet to install it just waiting on the new gaskets to arrive tomorrow.

Banjo bolt filter removed and pcv getting a clean out now.

Oil and filter change underway, should hopefully be back on the road by the end of the weekend.

You could just change the internals (cartridge) from your new one into the old ones snail as long as the old one is not damaged by the fan things. That might allow you to leave it bolted to the exhaust and intake manifold and just pull the front off.. Not sure if this will work on a Liberty but I did this on our turbo diesel 4wd. It saved hours of work and skinned knuckles and possibly broken bolts..

Don’t forget inlet pressure test & recrimp stock intercooler!
I use a set of parallel pliers for the latter.

A Kobe throttlebody hose is a great upgrade too, essential!
