Yep, sounds like the common valve body issue. Need to replace it. Not cheap, $3k.

In any case, speak to All Drive Subaroo, as they specialise in parts and gearboxes. Alternatively, search for a wrecker if it truly requires a rebuild.

Yeah thatd be it, shifting and slamming into gear, took it to an auto trans specialist and its a valve body issue. unlucky for me

Buy a turbine speed sensor from eBay and find a diy install post here, one was made recently.
Its 100% not a $3000 fix and anyone that’s forked out for that has been taken for a ride.

It absolutely drives me nuts that shady types in the trade keep preying on uninformed customers.

Also that Subaru Australia haven’t yet issued a TSB for the fault.

Depends if you can do the sensor repair yourself or find a mechanic willing to do the fix. A lot of mechanics won't attempt unofficial repairs like this for fear of needing to warrant the work if it goes wrong, particularly with ebay parts.

It's in the FSM, and the (final) solution is replace the valve body. Subaru don't sell the sensor separately as it is considered a non-repairable item.

On the other hand, there’s heaps of busted GenV autos out there and so far no one complaining about their diy Ebay turbine speed sensor fixes.

So there’s three options:
warranted fix
diy fix
pay mechanics labour for fix with supplied parts no warranty.

When the dollars run out, hopefully there’s some sense left over.

Agreed, it is a viable fix which seems to return strong value for money.

And also in response to your prior statement of needing second opinions on workshops, i greatly appreciate the help

Im going to do this me and my mates can do it im sure, i have a friend who is an apprentice at an auto trans place im sure if i get stuck he could give me advice but it doesnt look incredibly difficult. not that i mean to be an asshold but im just going to sell the car asap if i get it working, id rather a manual i cant drive for a few months than a car thats going to lose so much money on selling. But for my sake and the sake of the next owner, i hope that fixes it.

All I can say publicly is to find eg google and forum reviews and read the negative comments as well as the positive comments.

As for Subies, they’re generally great cars and very reliable: if the owner is considerate of wear and tear and takes some responsibility for basic diagnostics and upkeep.

Waiting for the car to tell you it’s not well, eg throwing CELs etc, I can’t recommend doing that with a few obvious exceptions.

Due to the huge user base and open source-ness of these cars, there’s few reasons to wind up needing big dollar fixes, if precautions are taken, eg taking note of common issues, doing logging and learning views.

P1701 is an exception, but luckily there’s a diy fix for that.
