I have some issues with my shaft, or to be more specific, the rubber on my shaft.

I figure the best bet is just to replace.

To me this seems like the most reasonable offer, at least for my limited searching (I'm not very well practised in searching for shafts):

Good price, Id buy and have before for my Legacy.

Is there anything else that it would be good to change in the process, like wheel bearings?

Also, the workshop manual speaks of using an axle shaft puller (I don't even have to make them up anymore) and oil seal protector etc.
Are these things really necessary?

Having just been through the whole CV joint thing, $200 seems like a good deal. I paid $27 for a new inner CV and boot which I had someone, who knows more about what they're doing than me, install for me. So far, so good.

If I drove my car hard like some of the boys I last went cruising with, then I might have spent more on the genuine article but, then, who is to say that the genuine article is not the same thing wrapped in a plastic bag (or cardboard box) with a Subaru logo on it?

I don't think I can be bothered to go to the extra effort of just doing boots and don't really want to pay someone stupid labour to install a $30 part. Plus I have a day under the car coming up soon for brakes & suspension changes so while I'm there...

That's what I figure. I drive my car pretty hard at times but not too ridiculous. If I break them then lesson learned.

And anyway, what could bethe difference? Materials and manufacturing process. And surely in this case they would be pretty similar.

You wont break them.....

I did track days and advanced/performance driver training days in my Legacy with those remanufactured shafts.

Well, whilst my refurbished ones died less than 6 months.
I did go thru one track day with them, but from memory I think I had some tell-tale signs of them going off before ...

These ones are not refurbished though. They are brand new, just not made by Subaru.
There are a number of sellers on ebay with brand new non-genuine ones.

Genuine shaft, buy it. It's only $1000 or some ridiculous figure.

Alternatively, be logical like most places (even at my work) and buy aftermarket from a drive shaft specialist, or Bursons, or sprints, or wherever. Hell, buy all 4, and then a spare set. and you'll STILL have change instead of buying ONE genuine.
