Gen IV stock speakers

Hey all,

As above, looking for some genIV stock speakers to use the mounts so don't care if the actual speaker is blown or stuffed.

Let me know if you've got any, if so, where and how much.

What do you mean by "use the mounts? If you mean the baffles (plastic thing between the driver and the door frame, I would suggest making new baffles from mdf and use the oem baffle as a template. You will yield much better results with a properly made baffle.

I this is the direction you're going to take them I would also suggest painting the baffles so as to minimise water damage and use some sealant around the baffle to minimise air leaks which will impact on you mid--range performance.

Otherwise, if you mean something completely different then ignore what I just wrote.

they sell pre-cut MDF templates at Autobarn of a few different thicknesses. id say check that out before you make them yourself. i made mine before i saw them at Autobarn, was quite annoyed...

Spot on mate. I've had a look at a few guides, think a guy on here (or elsewhere), used like plastic kitchen cutting boards for it which would seem like an idea, due to them not absorbing water, and being quite rigid and cheap.

I'll also be sound deadening the doors, so It will be sound deadening + new speakers, if that improves the sound enough I'll be happy, if not, next will be a new 4 way amp and mono to run the speakers and a new sub...if still not acceptable then, after market head unit (which i highly want to avoid)...

Also by the autobahn cut outs, are we talking just the good ole rings, or something else?

Any other suggestions would be great.

The cutting board is alright. I tried it, was a bit of a pain in the ass. Just make sure you find a cutting board thick enough so that the speaker magnet clears the window. Don't bother with the Autobarn premade ones, generally they don't match up with our original mounting locations.

All fairness, I've been through the whole process with the stock headunit. Its a POS. Save yourself the time and headache and just go for a new headunit. A new headunit with the stock speakers should sound better than the stock headunit with new speakers.

I did the exact same thing you are planning on doing. New speakers, headunit wasn't powerful enough (the stock speakers are like 18W RMS). Installed a 4 channel to power the front speakers and installed an 8" sub in the parcel shelf, wasn't too bad but still felt like there was something missing. Replaced from speakers again and bought a new 4channel to provide more power. Finally decided to install a new headunit and what a difference! Everything sounded so much clearer and detailed than before.

If you need a hand installing anything, let me know as I've stripped my car multiple times while installing my amps/subs/speakers etc.

Ok, so to swap out the stock head unit, Id need a new head unit ~$500 + Fascia plate ~$350 + a Pac unit (for the steering wheel controls yeah?)...a new amp to replace the current MC one, anything else?..will the new head unit have any issues with the satnav?

Thats essentially what you would need, however I'm not sure how the SatNav is wired in etc so I cannot comment on if you will/won't have issues with the satnav. The easiest way to test if the headunit has any bearing on the functionality of the satnav is to just disconnect the headunit temporarily and see if the satnav (and all its features) still work. If it does, then you are sweet to rip out stock headunit and replace, however if parts of the satnav don't function as expected, then further investigation will be necessary. (chances are that you wont have any sound warnings if you disconnect the headunit but when wiring in a new headunit these can be wired in quite easily)

Sorry to dig up an oldish post but did you guys have any issues removing the McIntoss head unit and keeping the satnav happy? I've got a 2004 GT with all the factory options so I'd like to keep the satnav but toss the 6-disc mcintosh. Also, any idea why the fascia is so costly?..

I can't help you with the sat nav thing but I can with the cost of the fascia:
1 - it's Subaru (nuff said)
2 - you actually get a whole new HVAC system (being that the existing one is actually integrated into the stock HU)

1 makes sense but same for me, the HVAC controls aren't part of the fascia in my car. Sits much lower. In fact all I need is the hazard lights button. The McIntoss takes up all the rest of the space! hope I can find an alternative...

Unless you're good with fabrication and plastic welding there is only one other option apart from oem.

It's not exactly neat nor does it look anything like oem.

Basically you can buy a 'fascia' from eBay for about $30 which is just a piece of black acrylic cut to roughly the right size.

I have one in my car and it is not the best finish, few gaps etc. bit of a pain to attach to since you have to make your own mounting points..

Would rather avoid having to do that, but seems like it may come down to that as I hardly need two HVAC controls and $350 missing from my wallet. hehe
