same, told me as my car was lower than standard that the angle had changed and to keep it in the same position the little one had to go on the bottom... i still made him change them

SegR wrote:Had these installed today. Won't get a chance to really test them out until the weekend; the slow drive home in peak-hour traffic did little for me. I think steering is a bit more responsive. It's smoother than it used to be... although my existing bushes were in good condition, they had quite a stiff feel to them which is now gone.

The mechanic did note the control arm position was changed as a result of these bushes. Is that expected? (not that he elaborated beyond the change of position)

Also I asked him to install the larger shim underneath and the smaller on top - as marked on the pack provided by Phat and as per his recent advice in this thread. (Mechanic was skeptical of this but said he did it as requested). Earlier posts in this thread have said to use the medium shims underneath. Why the change?

after trying all the different setups and speeking to the guys in Japan who make these bushes i have found that using the small shim at the top and the larger at the bottom give the best increase in handling

if you look at the instructions you will notice in the drawing how the three different set ups change the way the suspension works

the three ways the shims can be used
1 medium shim top and bottom
2 large top and small at the bottom ( very close to the stock setup)
3 small at the top and large at the bottom ...........best setup for keeping the car flatter on the road especialy out of the corners

Yeah right, Stew. I reckon it's that change in angle which causes some mechanics to do the wrong thing.

Phat - I thought it might be something like that :-)

yes, the change in angle reduces the anti-lift effect of the standard geometry.

Or reduces the lift effect of the standard geometry :-p

no, it increases the amount of lift and dive that you will see during acceleration and braking. Subaru designed it that way for a number of reasons including 1) reduced pitch changes for occupant comfort (reduce chance of people getting carsick); 2) increasing the understeer tendency at the limit for safety reasons to cope with all types of drivers.

Are you saying these bushes increase lift and dive over the stock bushes? Surely not. How could this provide a handling benefit?

One of the points of these bushes is to provide reduced lift (hence 'anti-lift') over the stock bushes is it not? Maybe I have a vivid imagination but they certainly seem to.

Tony.......

sorry but you maybe not understanding what angle changes these bushes are doing, by installing the shims in the way i advise you are decreasing the angle by raising the rear of the arm giving you more negative pull on the arm which will decrease the lift but also increase ride harness by a small %

so they increase the anti-lift and suspension binding effect of the stock setup?

Hey Phat,

Thanks for the reply. Will see if you have any stock in the new year. Hopefully you do, and hope you can do install as well.

Funds are just too tight at the moment.
