Donna Buang cruise 17-Oct-2010 - First post updated Oct-15

Postby Ric » Fri Aug 27, 2010 8:06 pm

Update: We've had to drop the Fernshaw leg of the proposed route, due to 10 km of gravel road to get there.
So, the new route is: Healesville - Donna Buang - Warburton - Reefton - Marysville - Black Spur - Maroondah Reservoir.
Further update - Friday Oct-15. Due to the weather, the bbq has been cancelled. Lunch will now be back at the start point, at the Beechworth Bakery in Healesville at 12 noon.

Open in Google maps

What is involved?
An early start. The whole point is to enjoy these roads before the Sunday drivers get out on them.
There is a little over two hours driving time, over 133 km.
Note, this is a "family friendly" cruise. There will be some spirited driving over some fantastic twisty roads, but we won't be breaking any speed limits, and partners are welcome.
Bring a full petrol tank, a camera, and a CB radio if you have one.

Start is from the carpark alongside the Beechworth Bakery in Healesville, from about 7:30.
Be there by 7:45, so we have time to distribute name tags, and be ready to leave at 8am.
8:00 - Leave Healesville. From there is is a 30 minute climb up C506 to the summit of Mt Donna Buang.
8:30 - Arrive at the summit. There is a carpark and observation tower there, so we'll stop for 20-30 minutes for photos and sightseeing. Donna Buang park brochure
8:50 - Leave summit. It's then a little over an hour to head down through Warburton, and up through the Reefton Spur to Marysville.
10:00 - Arrive at Marysville for morning tea.
10:30 - Leave Marysville
11:00 - Arrive at the Maroondah Reservoir Park. Park brochure
There is a big carpark here for some photos of it's not raining.
12:00 - Return to the Beechworth Bakery in Healesville for lunch.

I can't tell if it's there on the map, but add in the reefton spur or something to make the cruise longer.
1 hour 15 mins of driving seems very short, much shorter than the last cruise anyway. And that was still too short for me and many other people!

Also, messaged my mate in the R32 as soon as I saw you decided on the 17th for the cruise, and he will be applying for leave tonight when he goes to work. He couldn't last time as he had only been stationed at Richmond for a couple of weeks, applying for leave was out of the question, but not this time!

Naldo stop derailing the thread!
Just kidding, like I said, if the cruise is the 17th I'll happily take your detailing service on the 9th like planned, and then not drive the car for a week.
Cheers, see you on the 9th 8)

17/10 is good, also the route looks good from what I can see.

1.25 hours is plenty considering gotta get out to Healesville before that loop starts :) If there is no stop midway then driving for much longer at our pace can be quite mentally draining.

My suggestion is to get out to Healesville asap without stopping, then do the loop early morning before having lunch back in Healesville.

How about an early start again, say 8am, then Donna Buang road via Fernsaw to Marysville. Decent morning tea break in Marysville before tackling the Reefton Road back to Warburton for lunch. Then disperse from there. That should be about 3 hours of driving with a good rest break in the middle.

For those eager to do more, then they can follow me across the back of the Dandenongs on C411 down to Pakenham then a leisurely cruise back into Melbourne on the Monash!

Alternatively, they could do the whole morning legs in reverse, but count me out for this option. No, I mean no this time. No, I really mean n.......maybe not! Then again, if it is a nice day........ :D

Hey Mark,
Here is the best I could whip up, unfortunately my skills are a little off since back in my photochoppin days (I should really make a post someday of all my photochops of cars) but this is the best I could do, unfortunately I cannot change the cars in the pic to white without some serious time, this banner alone took me 30 minutes....Just so you know how hard I worked to give you what you wanted! :assassin:
Hope you enjoy, I'm open to critiques and suggestions provided it's not extremely difficult as I really enjoy photoshopping as a hobby.

Anyway here it is, enjoy.

Image

Go team White!

Edit: for those on Team black, I will get around to making a team black version tomorrow, only because I feel sorry for you suckers choosing a black car over the clearly superior white!
Any other coloured cars coming on the cruise let me know and I'll make a colour for your car, or I'll take specific requests for your names etc! Let's get these other states jealous 8)

Damn I was wasted last night.
