I didn't know brake pedal braces were a thing until I saw a few yesterday. Had to knock up a ghetto one...

It's pretty minimal... that box section only has 1.2mm walls, but it actually turned out pretty stiff. There's a flap bent forward from the back face, where it's bolted onto the strut tower. The hole in the top is for access to another mounting bolt. I wound up the preload on the screw bearing on the master cylinder until pretty much all of the flex was taken up.

Didn't notice much difference in feel when I took it for a quick spin, but the brakes seem easier to modulate for a smooth stop, so that's something.

Thanks Benny for getting us a great meeting before 2020 ends. Was my first car meeting ever! Met some awesome guys yesterday. Would love to have more meeting or even cruising in this year. :)

BTW, took a few random photos with my phone and uploading them to here:

It was really fun and very informative meeting everyone at the meet. Looking forward to many more of these meetings in the coming future. Thanks Ben, Leon and everyone for all the valuable information shared. I was literally drooling over Leon’s Tbsti :nyam:

Cheers, people: can you tell we spent most of last year in lockdown? :P

OK lets get crackling with the results:

Weaselbee trekked all the way from the countryside in her new to her MY04 prefl 5eat GT with GCG VF43, and thus got first dibs.

Visual inspection revealed the engine needs tlc:
PS pump low pressure return oring required, I'd do Norma clamps on the low pressure hose both ends for good measure. Clean it all up including the block, then see if the pump is leaking.

Iirc the oring at the base of the oil filler was leaking: grab one from Subaru when getting the PS pump oring.

Iirc theres evidence of a pressure leak at the bank1 rhs cam position sensor: easy fix and I have the oring size noted somewhere.

The engine has the usual idle miss, so I'd be checking the injector seat seals and upper & lower (of the injector risers/aka TGV (no TGV's in prefl GT)) inlet manifold gaskets.

The turbo has definite evidence of a waterfall of oil on the compressor cover: check PCV, oil drain for kinks, inlet pressure test to see if any PCV hoses are cracked etc, crankcase pressure test at idle seemed OK.

We peeped the exhaust avcs area on both heads: its covered in wet oil both sided.
This suggests a leaking exhaust OCV or exhaust cam sensor oring, or the flat gasket on the exhaust OCV manifold:

Its a "take action immediately" as this oil inundation can saturate the loom and work its way throughout the loom to other sensors and indeed the ECU.
Otherwise the log indicates AVCS is working perfectly! Yay!!!

The car has aftermarket silicone inlet & throttlebody hoses: awesome, but requires the stepped adapter bell between inlet pipe and short fat bit.

The stock intercooler has mashed fins so it needs replacing asap, regardless of whether its (probably) leaking or not.

The LV tells the story: what looks like idle and boost leaks maxing out fuel corrections, IAM has dropped due to knock.

I didn't log fuel corrections alas but the LV makes up for that.

If it was my car I'd get the inlet pipe adapter, a new oem MAF (on km) a working tmic, fix those orings, use an ebay UV dye kit in the oil, inlet pressure test it: extensively, and then see if the intake manifold should come off to refresh all the things: if required.

We logged per cylinder misfires: none :)

MegalogviewerHD. Despite all the weirdness the car runs fairly well: Subaru's knock control strategy at work!

Personally I'd be taking things easy though :P

See how well AVCS is doing? I'd be happy to not log that (or misfires) except every few months to check.

Sean, or any other actual expert could probably explain it better than I but my unserstanding is that since fuel corrections are maxed in two ranges, FBKC is very active... I'd love to apply the fixes to this car and see it improve. :good:

The stock intercooler has mashed fins so it needs replacing asap, regardless of whether its (probably) leaking or not.

With some small screwdrivers and a lot of patience the fins can be straightened. Definitely an "off the car" job or one's lower back would collapse.

Next up: Kimmo's MY07 GT-b.

Visual inspection revealed (from memory: patchy :P ) the usual PS pump low pressure return and oil filler tube base orings requiring replacement.
Kim got the car with a PW TMIC installed but its not using the supplied brackets, just big zip ties.
Despite this, the GFB bov is rubbing on the bonnet reo (I'd hole saw that out carefully)
Its a large heavy piece (the tmic) so securing it with the PW brackets would be a good idea: hopefully the underside of the cooler isnt mashed up on the pitch stop or engine loom plug.

I pinched the LV from Kim's diagnostic thread here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=36646

It suggests to me theres a boost leak, I'd be inlet pressure testing asap.
I've forgotten other items, perhaps Kim can chime in?
As for a log, we either didn't make one or logging was a fail: apologies!
However Kim has a BtSSM setup and can log anytime it suits. If so, please send a link ;)

Leon's unique horn SWP tbSTi with 257 short, PW tmic etc.

Leon's using a Lufi generic OBDII gauge to monitor coolant temps and boost etc.
The Lufi isnt full SSM (Subaru Select Monitor) like Btssm, but any OBDII monitoring is better, way better than none.
Especially as Leon tracks his cars, an environment that pushes the cooling system to its limits.

Here's max boost in 2nd gear: boost pressure overshoots as usual in lower gears, its probably tuned to 18psi.
In other sections of the log we see 18psi max in higher gears tapering to 12psi which is usual for a VF46 (hopefully its not a vf52 :P )
We can see AVCS is ok, if starting to lag: thats a watch and see.
Same as my car, bank 2 lags.
However maximum angles are at 42 degrees, my car is occasionally maxing out at 52 which is evidence of "integral windup" in the self calibrating system
Id be tempted to swap the OCV's side to side to prolong their life.

Leon scatter graph.png

So in general, we can see the car is experiencing some knock under load, but that it seems to be within the scope of the knock limiting system.
Fuel corrections are within range in the LV, but thanks to a brain fart, I didn't log LTFT & STFT, oops :(
Like most Libs, Subies in general, I'd say the car would benefit from a UEC treatment.
Hopefully a proper expert can chime in, but given the state of tune and how hard the car is driven, I dont see any huge causes of concern.
