Me too, all I remember is the two o-rings you pointed out - I busted out a pen and paper to get it down, but you never got around to reiterating. Which is cool, I think you said we could do a proper list when I rock over for a pressure check. (Maybe next weekend?)

The stock intercooler has mashed fins so it needs replacing asap, regardless of whether its (probably) leaking or not.

With some small screwdrivers and a lot of patience the fins can be straightened. Definitely an "off the car" job or one's lower back would collapse.

Couldn't you use one of those refrigeration fin combs to straighten the fins?
They look a bit like a plastic brush or comb.

Like most Libs, Subies in general, I'd say the car would benefit from a UEC treatment.
Hopefully a proper expert can chime in, but given the state of tune and how hard the car is driven, I dont see any huge causes of concern.

Not sure if I forgot to say thank you again for all the hard work.

Took your advice and tried UEC (finally) and there was literally no smoke to be seen. The car took half a can through the BOV pipe without hesitation too - so I didn't bother with the rest. It smelled a little poor for about 30 seconds after initial start up but there was nothing more afterwards. Guessing this is a good sign? Perhaps the old Italian tune up works .

Did you use the bov vacuum reference hose?

Did you add some of the can with someone holding idle, then dump the rest with the car off, letting it soak?

Its variable, I did my car after 3 years or so and got an absolute smoke screen, a first for me and the car seems way smoother.

Upper Engine Cleaner - a powerful solvent that helps remove accumulated carbon, oil, fuel, etc. from the intake manifold. Eg this gunk:



On that topic, my local mechanic says you don't need Upper Engine Cleaner when you're running on E85. That seems to stack up for my car when i removed the throttle body to discover this fairly clean-looking yellow fluid instead of gunk:

Ah yeah, you can look up the msds, or even the diy recipe.
I forget what it is exactly but it’s a mix of commonly available fuel safe solvents.

Acetone mainly?

E85 has all that plus the power of steam cleaning the engine

I’m still planning to run e85 for a month or so just to clean out the engine from the fuel tank forwards, following up with a replacement bucket filter and new pump: mine have done around 150k km, meaning it’s time for another fuel (and MAF) birthday.

It's a bit of a trade-off in terms of what gets cleaner and what gets new issues.

Eg. the amount of water vapour that ends up in the crank case is a real eye-opener. The car ceases to be any good for 5 minute "cold oil" trips to the shops for that reason. Oil selection becomes important for that reason alone. I switched from Penrite GF5 to Penrite Ten Tenths for a few reasons, but one benefit was ugly yellow foam disappearing from the oil fill tube & catch cans.

Some report injectors seizing up if the E85-fueled car sits unused for months. Mine is daily-driven on weekdays so no issues there.

Some horror stories circulate about fuel filters filling up with dislodged cr@p after a switch to E85, but I never experienced that. It will be interesting to see what your fuel filter looks like cut open after n000 kms after the E85 switchover.

Ten Tenths is a good way to go for oil anyways

Make me wonder what kind of issues people are running into using a Flex dual fuel system or maybe it solves some of them?

Well the other one is to add a sturdy gland to the plenum or throttlebody hose and spray atomised water (or uec) using a hobbs switch activated accumulator & pump. Probably way less investment than a dedicated flex fuel install.
