Day Trips from Melbourne

Postby champ » Sun Jul 14, 2013 10:02 pm

Will be taking the purchasing-car-parts-approver and the poop-maker for their first visit to Vic (7-14 Sept).

Anyone free got a mini meet on the Friday before I leave Melb (or any other time)? A place like the last time would be ideal. :D

Would welcome accommodation / transportation recommendations.

oh, and will it still be snowing on the mountains? Suggestions of places to go most welcomed. not for skiing or boarding, just for the girls to play with snow - something we don't have in WA.

How old are the girls? For simple snow play lake mountain and Mt. Baw Baw is great and never too cold that you need to go all out with snow gear. Other than that Bulla or Hotham are the better options but they're both 3-5 hrs+ drive from CBD, whereas you can probably get up to lake mountain or baw baw under 2.

As for the meet-up - Let's see what happens :)

Yeah doesn't sound like you need to get out the toboggans, if it's for sight seeing purposes, probably baw-baw or lake mountain but you will have to keep an eye on the weather. All it takes at that time of year (once the temperature is above 5 or so degrees there) is a dump of rain and the season is over....

Cool, thanks for the head-up.
Would Mt Hotham be a safer bet? Plan is head to Melb, spend a few days, head to mountains for a few quiet ones, then back to Melb to thaw for a few days.

It's a tad over 5 hours to drive from Melbourne to Mt Hotham in Winter...

any good car rental place you guys can recommend also?
Short of getting a full blown 4WD, the normal car rental places don't have AWDs (aka recent Subaru's except the BRZzzz)... or would a regular car be OK?

Ok, decided not to head to the mountains... The people there called to say rain forecasted.

So what to do in Melbourne and any day trip recommendations?

Just wrote an epic reply, i could work for Vic tourism if i learned to copy my message before trying to submit.

The Dandenongs; good good, sights and walks.
Varra Valley; Great food and wine.
Werribee Zoo; for the littly weather dependent.
Phillip Island; beach, race track (karts), Mac and Cheese pie from Woolami general store.
Geelong, Torquay, Lorne; beach, sights, maybe an over night stay if possible.
Mt Baw Baw; Snow play. I'd check the reports again.

Enjoy the weather!
