Fiberglass workshop: fix your lip etc.

Postby bigBADbenny » Wed Jul 10, 2013 10:48 pm

I need to fix up my cracked genuine STi lip and some road rashed side strakes imported from J.
If anyone would like to fix theirs too I'd be happy to share materials and skillz ;)

Basically I've been wanting to learn paint prep and so I'm beginning from the ground up with fiberglass repairs and bumper prep.
Inspiration from:
Cruisn's lip repair how-to part 1, part 2, part 3

and from these bodykit repair guides.
http://www.stanceiseverything.com/2010/ ... ip-repair/
http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page=we ... paint.html

I bought a fiberglass kit for $50 from my local chandler. I then went to my local paint shop and asked about auto fillers and paint prep supplies.
They kindly suggested I go to an auto paint specialist Paint Center on Somerville Rd Sunshine http://goo.gl/maps/ZpeJT

I explained what I wanted to the staff, namely hobby sized quantities of the materials to get me going with the lip and strake repair.
The $50 fiberglass kit from the chandler is fine but Paint Center had two better options at around $36 and $50, both with more material and the bigger kit with acetone, for shifting dirt etc that Prepsol won't, (acetone is stronger). Motorspray is the brand name.
Image

I needed some sandpaper and wet n' dry, and the boss advised to not go too fine at this stage, since the paint needs a decent key to adhere to.
Thus I wound up with 120 and 180 for the coarse leveling of the harder Reo Fill and 240, 400, 600 for leveling the softer fills.

The staff at Paint Center were really helpful with sorting out my list so I didn't buy too much or too little or have any necessary duplication of similar items.
So with a couple of cool discounts, thanks, the kit of Reo Fill (has short fiberglass strands for strength), Spot Putty, Bumper Fill (its flexible) and 5 grades of paper came to $50. Total spend so far $100, still required: a little chicken wire.

This is the kit I bought, should be at least enough for 2 lip repairs.

Thats a great idea Ben!
Cracked lips seem to be an epidemic among liberty owners. It would be great if you took a few progress pics to show northerners how you did it and how it turned out :D

Thanks for the info an encouragement!

I was considering using some plastic L section and plenty of black sikaflex, so the repair might flex a little, but went the conventional path instead for some reason.

I've ripped off my Ebay PU lip about 4 times now.
So glad I didn't waste cash on a genuine STi one

I just take to it with the hair drier if there's any buckles and shape it up again.

My suggestion would be to keep the genuine STi lip in a box in the cupboard and only put it back on when you sell the car

I actually toyed with the idea of making an inner "spine" for my lip made from 2mm scrap ally sheet and with some 4mm tabs tacked on to go through 4 of the front mounting points
that would provide some more rigidity to the lip but still flexible enough to to damage the bar itself if caught up on something

Would you be willing to fix others' STI lips who can't be bothered/have never fibreglassed (ie. me)?
If so, how much?

Just help cover the costs of the remaining consumable items I need to acquire. ;)
I have to review cruisn's how-to.

I have:
1 small fiberglass kit (with 1m x 25cm cloth).
Some body filler.

I need:
chicken wire (if reinforcement required)
loose strand fiberglass
more sandpaper and wet n dry papers
plastic filler...
high fill undercoat,
undercoat
satin/etc. paint for top coat

There's an auto paint supply shop out west that should have everything required.
