Hillclimb "come and try day" at Rob Roy 8-Sep-2013

From: http://www.mgcc.com.au/robroy/index.shtml
This is for all drivers who would like to have a go at hillclimbing. Entry is only $25
Runs will NOT be timed, and we don't want people to be going more than 80% of full speed. Instructors will be available to ride with you.
If you do not already have a CAMS "speed" licence, you can purchase a "one-day" licence at the venue for $25.
You will require an approved crash helmet, and have a fire extinguisher securely mounted in your car.
More details will be posted about a month before the event.

If you're curious to have a look at the track, there is a Historic event happening there this coming weekend.
I think it's about $10 per car entry fee to spectate.

(Edit: That was the weekend after I first posted this!)

Entries have now opened for the "Come and Try" day.
Forms can be downloaded from http://www.mgcc.com.au/robroy/index.shtml

Note, we reached the maximum number of entries before the day last year, so couldn't accept any more on the day.
If you're interested in coming, make sure you enter early.
Entry is free for spectators. :)

Hi Ric

I have a few questions

1. Is there still availability?
2. Do we need to pay in advance or just cash on the day?
3. Do we have to be there at 8.30am, or is 9.30ish OK so long as there's time for the scrutiny by 10am?
4. I have an extinguisher, but don't want to bolt it to the car - is there any way of attaching which will meet requirements (eg. cable tie /glove box)?
5. Are there likely to be helmets available to borrow/hire on the day?
6. Can you have 2 in the car at the same time if the 2nd person isn't an instructor (eg. Dad - I think he's done Rob Roy in the past)
7. If it's not timed, is it still one car a time around the course? Do you get to go more than once?
8. If I'm required to keep to 80% of my maximum speed, does this mean I'm permitted to do about 176kms/h?

1. Is there still availability?
Yes. You could safely leave it to a week or so before the event.

2. Do we need to pay in advance or just cash on the day?
In advance

3. Do we have to be there at 8.30am, or is 9.30ish OK so long as there's time for the scrutiny by 10am?
9:30 is pushing it. I'd get there by 9 at the latest.
You need to have your paperwork checked before scrutiny, and have the car ready-to-run when you take it to scrutiny (i.e. all loose objects removed from it)
When you're competing, you'd normally remove the spare wheel too. For this day, it's up to you so long as it is firmly secured in place.
There will be a queue for scrutiny, so rocking up at 10:00am won't work ;)

4. I have an extinguisher, but don't want to bolt it to the car - is there any way of attaching which will meet requirements (eg. cable tie /glove box)?
No, it must be firmly secured, so it's accessible, and won't come loose in a collision. Cable ties will not be accepted.
If you ask nicely, you can borrow my bracket, which attaches to the two bolts on the front of the seat mount.

5. Are there likely to be helmets available to borrow/hire on the day?
There will be a couple of loaner helmets available.

6. Can you have 2 in the car at the same time if the 2nd person isn't an instructor (eg. Dad - I think he's done Rob Roy in the past)
No, but if your dad has a CAMS speed licence, he can sign on as an instructor, then it would be ok.

7. If it's not timed, is it still one car a time around the course? Do you get to go more than once?
Yes. It's exactly the same as a full event, just the clock won't be running.
One car on the course at a time, and you should get about 5 runs.

8. If I'm required to keep to 80% of my maximum speed, does this mean I'm permitted to do about 176kms/h?
That's a judgement call. You're just expected to be a little off your maximum pace, so there's less chance off you hitting the Armco.

:) Agreed.
In my 3.0R, I briefly get to 120 at two places on the track (base of "The Wall", and crossing the finish line.
You can see my logs at: viewtopic.php?p=103928#p103928

The very quickest open-wheelers might get to 160.

You can come and have a look at a hillclimb beforehand if you want.
There are three events coming up before the come and try day.
18 Aug: VSCC Vintage hillclimb. (Probably about $15 spectator fee). Lots of older cars
25 Aug: MG Club event. Free spectator entry) Mainly MGs running
1 Sep: Interclub Challenge (Probably about $15 spectator fee) Mix of old and new cars.

Thanks Ric for your comprehensive responses - I was joking about 176kms/h! :D

Since we can't go together, if sharing the same car for a couple of runs each is it still $55pp? I presume yes, but thought I'd ask as it means only one car to "scruitinize" rather than 2.

Yes, $55 each, as part of that entry fee is an insurance payment to CAMS.
That does mean you are EACH entitled to 5 runs though.

There were 55 entries (out of 105 max) on Tuesday night.
There's probably been a few more since, as it was mention on "In Pit Lane" on C31 on Tuesday night, but I'm pretty sure we're not full yet.
It would be a good idea to apply before though, rather than rolling up on the day hoping to get in.

Thanks for letting me know about the day Ric and for guiding me up the hill for the first run!
My second and third runs went a hell of a lot better :)
Had an absolute ball and would jump at the chance to do some more runs and set a time.

In the end, we had 99 entrants running, so we could have squeezed in another 6.

You can't run a modern car in the "Historic and Classic" event in November, but you can enter the round of the "Victorian Hillclimb Championship" that will be held at Rob Roy on 2-Mar-2014, or there will be an "Interclub Championship" round early in the year also.
(and see if you can beat the 25.90 I did in my Gen-4 3RB in February last year. :) http://www.mgcc.com.au/robroy/results/2 ... esults.pdf )

Will put that in the diary.
I'll need a few more runs to get near that time!!
