Oct-30 cruise: Tullamarine, Mt Macedon, Trentham, Blackwood.

Postby Ric » Wed Aug 17, 2011 11:47 am

The next cruise is on the Melbourne Cup weekend, i.e. Sunday Oct-30
We will head west of Melbourne, with a stop on top of Mt Macedon
Meetup is 7:30am on Sunday morning at the Tullamarine McCafe, for an 8am start. (Melway 5:J10)
There's Shell, Caltex, BP & 7-Eleven/Mobil servos nearby.
Comments and suggestions welcome :D
Notes for those on their first cruise wrote:
  • The early start is to ensure other traffic is light, so we can enjoy the roads! ;)
  • Bring a CB radio if you have one.
  • Make sure your fuel tank is full!
  • Make sure Ric knows your first name, plus those of your passengers, so he can make club name-tags for you.
  • The drive will be at a brisk but legal pace over some nice winding roads. You should have fun without terrifying your passenger(s).

First Second Third draft of the probable route: (now includes a stop at "Gravity Hill", point E, for an interesting optical illusion ;))
Tullamarine to Werribee 264km 5 hours 13 mins (driving time only)

or you can bail out half-way:
Tullamarine to Ballan 147km 2 hours 56 mins (then cruise back to Melbourne down the Western Highway)

.  65km   0:30    09:47 Allow 30 min for photos and a walk out to the giant cross. There is a cafe for coffee, ice-cream etc.
. 104km   0:55    10:42 Trentham Falls

.                       Finish at McDonalds on corner of Synnot St and Pine St. Late lunch

Special notes:
Detailed notes for the first few km, as we may get split up by traffic lights, and some warnings for later on...
  • 0.0 km Exit the McDonalds carpark and turn right into International Drive.
  • 0.1 km Turn right from International Drive into Mickleham Rd, southbound towards the freeway.
  • 0.4 km Turn right from Mickleham Rd onto the Tullamarine Freeway (towards the airport)
  • 1.5 km Stay in the right hand lane as we pass the airport. There may be queued up traffic trying to get into the airport in the left lanes.
  • 7.6 km Just after the roundabout at Oaklands Rd, we will pull over onto the left shoulder if we need to wait for stragglers
  • 10 km Sunbury Rd in Bulla. We have a loopback here, so you will see Libertys going the other way. Cameras ready!
  • 16 km Wildwood Rd. Single lane bridge. Be prepared to stop if there is a car coming the other way.
  • 22 km Wildwood Rd. Road is about 1.5 cars wide here, so you need to put two wheels onto the shoulder if you meet a car coming the other way. Slow down & be careful, there's loose gravel and potholes!
  • 42 km Sutherland Rd. Fresh roadwork. Leave a gap between you and the car in front, as the stones will kick up.

Would love to come, but think i'll be best to sit this one out as may be cutting it a bit fine with the impending bun. Don't know that I want to start the cruise with two in the car and finish up with three
