first thing she noticed was the door went "whump" instead of "clunk".

Still slamming the doors though :?

Should I do both inner and outer layers for the rear doors? Or not bother?

Clarence, just do the windows to. You'll lower heat loss/gain as well.

Outer shell is more than enough, but I'm sure if you did both, your car would be even better for noise reduction and also speaker performance. I haven't bothered, but sounds like you've got the bug. ;-) If you've got the spare, then why not.

the next car I'll prolly do outside and inside, but it's more than enough for the moment (the bruises on the forearms are just starting to show).

noticed today on the way home that I may have to drop the bass back a bit... was starting to distort at about 32 (normally starts at 35, full vol is 40).

HAHAHHA, yeah, my bruises started yesterday. Most of the scratches have cleared up now, except for the fingers and knuckles.

Yeah, a speaker refit will correct that though ;-)

It's good to see so many positive comments. For a mod that's otherwise pretty cheap, the results are well beyond the cost.

Consider the amplifier and speaker upgrade you'd need to perform to get the same result. It'd be WELL above $1000 starting price + fitment.

I still can't believe how small the magnets are. They must be made out of Krypton coz with some decent power through them they actually sound pretty damn good for everyday listening. I think on the bank they were stamped with 15WRMS or something.

Given that most good aftermarket head units put out about 22WRMS absolute tops, it is actually a pretty good match.

I'd say the 15W RMS is peak RMS handling.

My 3-way Dyns can handle 1000W RMS peak loads (per speaker :o ) but prefer being run at 150W RMS per speaker, so there's a BIG difference between what's printed on a magnet and what they'll sustain.

The sensitivity on the stockies must be fairly high then because they do get reasonably loud :)

Craig do you know what the stock speakers are all rated at?

i.e. will I destroy my stock speakers with m PDX-5? :P

Not much, and in time, absolutely.

I think they're rated at a nominal 25W (from 8ohms) but remember that I'm looking at the 4 way door setup with 4 x 8 Ohms speakers so the actual power you'd get to each speaker would be well below the power rating of the amp (30W per channel x 4 into 8 Ohms).

The bigger issue with the factory cones is the material they're made of and how durable it is under load. If you look at hte cone, it's mostly cardboard, the magnets are small and not well ventilated, the interface between the cone and basket is fairly frail sponge material and the list goes on. If you pound them hard with big music, they'll wear a lot faster and die. The amp and head unit you have will have the ability to push them well beyond what they're designed for.

Having said that, they are going to be fed clean power...
