Why not do both? For one day cruisers, they can part company at midday (Jamieson) and the remainder can forge on to Bright. In any case, I would consider to do this route anyway, as I have been wanting to for a while now. My preference is for an overnight cruise and get to see the high country in summer.

Cruisn and I did discuss briefly the meet up with the Sydney folk and I suggested a meet in Holbrook and a return route via Snowy Mountains Hwy to Cooma, then down through Bombala on the Monaro Hwy to Orbost (see the flowing Snowy River), then back into to Melbourne. For me, I would suggest this is more of a 3 day tour as there will be lots of places to stop along the way to take in the scenery/history.

Actually, maybe we should define a new category, "Tourers", for those cruises that exceed one day!

The tourers can hang pannier racks and bags off the back of their cars too, to carry extra food clothing and fuel ;)

I'm thinking maybe between Christmas and NYE for a 2-day one.

Inbetween Xmas and NYE I would be going for 1 day since I'm house sitting during that time. Happy to meet you guys during the day leg if you are pulling a 2 day trip.

...

Maybe, although I wouldn't want to dump the "day-cruisers" in a remote place like Jamieson!
Maybe we could run together all the way to Mansfield ( route ) 163 km, 2 hours 56 mins
Then the day-trippers could run back to Melbourne via Yea.
So their total trip would be Healesville to Coldstream ( route ) 307 km, 4 hours 57 mins
(That's a nice easy road back to Melbourne from Mansfield :))
Or, obviously they could just turn around at Jamieson, and do the first leg in reverse back to Healesville, which should total to 259 km, 4 hours 42 mins.

Geez guys.....talk about commitment and thought process......ehehehehe bloody Xcellent! :D

For me xmas and NY is time for family and also the busiest time at work for me...so dont think I can commit to any of the suggested cruises...

If it was in early to mid jan? then...maybe....

Eitherway....that would be taking cruises to the next level....

Anyone want to set aside a four day long weekend to do this? Australia Day is on Thursday this year, so I am proposing to take the Friday as a leave day and then we can depart on Friday morning early, Friday night in Bright, then the day 2 segment on Saturday and back home for Saturday night! Should be good family wise as you can spend Australia Day with family, chores, whatever... then Sunday with family as well, chores or penance...

I am going to do a recce of the route on 27 / 28 Dec and check out some accommodation in Bright area. Feel free to join in at any stage.

Ok, so the recce of the 1st leg is locked in for 27 Dec. I will arrive at Lilydale McDonald's at 7.30 am for an 8.00 am departure. Planning to try this route from Lilydale to Jamieson:

http://maps.google.com.au/maps/ms?msid=203062721149592862156.0004b4cc5a0cbcf955e90&msa=0&ll=-37.555465,145.840759&spn=1.800698,3.56781

Then this route from Jamieson to Whitfield via Mansfield:

http://maps.google.com.au/maps/ms?msid=203062721149592862156.0004b4cc67f3edfb93079&msa=0&ll=-36.97513,146.244507&spn=0.907319,1.783905

I may conclude the recce at that stage and return to Melbourne, or continue on if I can manage the 28 Dec as well.
