Next cruise - Mount Baw Baw?

Next cruise - Mount Baw Baw?

Postby Ric » Mon Oct 18, 2010 8:18 pm

So here's a place to start kicking around some ideas for the next cruise.

Option 1 Lilydale - Noojee - Mt Baw Baw - Willow Grove - Moe - Eumemmerring
http://goo.gl/maps/Khq3 4 hours 21 minutes. 297 km
A possible route starting from the McDonalds next to Lilydale Subaru, and finishing up in Moe.
Mt Baw Baw park brochure
(You could then make your own way home back along the M1. I've included that leg in the total distance.)
  • 08:30 Leave Lilydale
  • 09:45 Coffee/toilet break in Noojee
  • 10:45 Arrive at Mt Baw Baw

Option 2 Todd Rd - Avalon - Queenscliff ferry - Flinders - Hastings - Eumemmerring
http://goo.gl/maps/N3fq 4 hours 46 minutes. 225km

An anticlockwise trip around the bay. Note this includes a $50 per car ferry trip.
We head towards Geelong first, to avoid Sunday morning crowds heading down to the Mornington Peninsula.
I've tried to stay off busy roads to keep it interesting. Alternative routes welcome.

version 1 of this post wrote:Here's two possible routes, starting from the McDonalds next to Lilydale Subaru.

http://goo.gl/maps/uBqc
Via Seville, Launching Place, Yarra Junction, Powelltown, Noojee.
1:54 116km

or http://goo.gl/maps/HZ28
Via Healesville, Marysville, Toorongo
2:33 173km
(Edit, scrub this option. There's miles of gravel roads on C511 after the turnoff down to Reefton. :( )

Has anyone ever driven either of these roads?
We could go out on one, and back on the other if they are both ok.

Nice Ric,

I can give it a drive this weekend maybe, starting point is about 10 mins from my house.
Anyone keen to go for a drive? I'll see if Devour will come.

The Marysville route is off the table, so we'd have to decide if we want to come back the way we went, or just cruise down through Neerim to the Princes freeway.

Anyone who really wants to get their car filthy could continue through to Walhalla, and down through Moe. There's some lovely winding roads south of Walhalla :)

Note, Baw Baw was just a suggestion. If anyone knows some good twisties anywhere else, feel free to suggest them.
We were looking to make this cruise a bit longer, but without too many long boring bits. :)

If we go via Baw Baw, we could come back this way: http://goo.gl/maps/Khq3

This adds the road going south from "Icy Creek" to Moe, with a stop off at a carpark overlooking "Blue Rock Pool" at Willow Grove.
If we don't bbq at Baw Baw, you could have a late lunch at Moe, then cruise back home on the M1.

4 hours of driving might be a little too much for most people? Especially those who already need to travel an hour to get to the starting point.

Like me? ;)
It's 3:43 if you just follow the same route back to Lilydale.
I picked the option through Moe so you could just cruise home on the freeway. :)
I'm interested to see what comments we get. Some people think the previous cruises have been too short.
We could just let people pick their own way home from Baw Baw.

Oh yeah I wasn't speaking for myself, as you know we went on a further cruise after the August one, and I was considering going on another with Mark on Sunday but we would have had to take that dirt road again which I wasn't keen on.

Just some people might be put off by the length of it, not me though!

I'll drive the Lilydale section this weekend if it's not raining, but if I spot any dirt roads I'll be turning back! :D

Oh also Ric, you can remove the cruise text from the top of the forum

Andy, I hope you realise you bought a Subaru.
AWD my friend, built for corners.

No point driving down to somewhere like Phillip Island, can you imagine the amount of police attention?
If you are looking to see people REALLY give it their all, head to a track.
Ric is part of the MG club and races, you could even participate in the next Rob Roy Hill Climb event if you get a drivers seat mounted fire extinguisher and racing helmet, and then buy your CAMS license on the day.
I might be doing that, we could get a few members going too :)

Why would you drive down to Phillip Island, you would have to take the highways.
No fun driving down straight stretches of road for an hour!

Having said that I do know a 'secret road' near phillip island that is about a 5km dead straight stretch of road that nobody uses.
For all you high speed hoons!
