I'm assuming his ECU was bricked ?

I'm always wary when I flash.

What happened and what can one do to avoid bricking their ECU ?

There's a few reasons why an ecu can brick.

The connection gets stuff up while flashing ie dodgy connection. The ecu runs out of flashes.
Sometimes even if the emobiliser turns on for some reason it can cause the ecu to brick.

Matt wasn't sure about mine as this was only its 3rd tune. When some cars have been tuned 5-10 times with no problems.

Either way the ecu is out. Getting unbricked today for free. Normally $200-$250. Then back on the dyno tomorrow :).

The other thing to think about Taylor is how many times has yours ACTUALLY been flashed?

It might only be it's third 'tune', but how many interim flashes are there while a tune is being developed? Given how much time Matt spent road tuning and on the dyno, I'm guessing a lot!

Yea Matt was on his 16 or 17 flash when it bricked. The ECU's are normally good for 100's.
oh well she's getting fixed today. Hopefully the first n last time. I'm just glad we can get it done for free by Sean and his ECUTEK software.

It would be good to know the actual number of times a ecu can be reflashed, but at this point, it sounds like its a number between 1 and 1000. Its good to know that you can 'un-brick' the ecu also even if it does cost a bit to do.
