Thredbo Cruise

Thredbo Cruise

Postby sundayDriver » Tue Jan 05, 2010 5:20 pm

I'm keen to go out past thredbo and do the alpine road loop. We can drive through without paying the $16 park fee if we're not stopping.

Hey Tan,

that sounds like a good idea, both sound good, what sort of distance are we talking for thredbo ??

Mac Pass and nowra sounds good, we going to do a loop through to wollongong and then back via highway. or head south to the clyde ?

I would really love for a good drive :) now i am catching the bus to work, wont be driving the liberty around as much :)

The fee is basically a parking fee and not charged if just passing through the park so you just tell them you are going to Khancoban.

The trip is 170kms from Canberra to Jindabyne then 280kms back to Cooma via Khancoban and Cabramurra. From Cooma it's 110ks back to Canberra so it's a 560km round trip. If it goes ahead I'd go from Canberra to Jindy and stop for lunch, fuel etc. It's about a 3 1/2 trip back to Cooma at legal speeds and but you'd probably want to stop in Cabramurra for a break and a coffee before heading back to Cooma. For those who don't know the road it's very twisty, ie 15km/h hairpins, which are challenging when trying to keep it to one side of the road but a lot of fun. It's beautiful country especially this time of year as you go from the stark brown plains of the Monaro the the green canopy of the high-country around the Main Range and Kosi, the whole Banjo Paterson deal.

If we can get good numbers I can organise somewhere nice for lunch like Lake Crackenback or the Wild Brumby Distillery. There are also cheaper options like the Lake Jindy Hotel if that is more suitable.

Adrian, thanks for the posting the distance of the loop. It's a big day, but it always is when you're after some twisties.

I'll probably do it as a day trip with an early start (other option is to drive up to cooma the night before and stay in a hotel).

I've done nowra before, so my preference is to do something new (i'm that kinda guy).

If you can I'd wait until after school holidays as there are a lot of people on the roads up here at the moment.

I'll check the school term dates. The quieter the roads the better.

I'm going to keep the organisation of this relaxed until it's closer to the date. But I'll keep you both posted.

School term 1 starts the 28th of Jan (Thurs). So the 30th (saturday) should be good to go.

How's everyone placed for that day?

It's a GREAT drive - I drove Adaminaby to Cabramurra to Thredbo... The Snowy Mountains Highway is great, and and the road past Cabramurra is narrow and windy but in great condition and a great drive...

I drove Khancobin to Thredbo in bad fog - that wasn't so much fun...

It is a great drive. The video showed a lot of the beautiful country around here. I'm really sorry but I had to laugh when I heard the music. I know you probably worked hard and the footage was great but I think everyone who takes video footage up here uses that music. Again, sorry but it gave me a giggle.

Both Cooma and Jindabyne have BPs that stock Ultimate. Only regular unleaded in Thredbo, can't remember what's in Cabramurra but I wouldn't count on 98.
