I personally think hand polishing gives a better finish

The general thoughts of other detailers is that machines are faster and give just as good if not better finish.
Starting with hand polishing is a good idea.

Meguires ultimate compound is a great product to start with, removes small scratches and swirl mark, could then go over it with Meguires ultimate polish to get that deep wet look and finish it with any of the wax's, meguries has a few. I use ultimate gold or next gen 2.0 when using a Meguires wax.
You should be able to get those three products (ultimate compound, ultimate polish and one of the wax's) for around $100, they will last you a while though
