Tail Light Smoking / Darkening

Postby dannyb88 » Wed Sep 22, 2010 9:27 pm

Hi i'm really hooked on cars and their SMART owners that darken their taillights instead of goin for the ugly, overdone chrome/crystal ones.

So im wondering has anyone done it to their Gen3 and have pics??? culd u post em up here :)

But, more importantly, where did u get it done, how much, and how did u find the place that did it?? (im in sydney)

Thanks heaps guys.

Hi Daniel,

This isn't my car but another forum members - he used two coats of VHT nightshades.

I think you can buy it from supercheap but google it and see what pop's up.

Cheers,

I feel that's a little to dark. My rear garnish doesn't pass ADR's. Be careful if you get rear ended the police might book you and your insurance might not cover you.

thanks. yeah i agree, bit too dark

so the VHT is a spray from a can yeah?

F'n cops and F'n laws. there are two seperate brake lights to the garnish, in window and spoiler. they wont be darkened so how can a rear-enderer say that they didnt see the brake lights!? ;)

thanks guys.

ADR stands for Australian Design Regulations. If a car is sold in this country, it must comply with these regulations, hence why a Subaru Liberty in Australia can differ in some ways to a Subaru Legacy sold in Japan for example.

Shane's car is a Jap import and would have gotten a yellow compliance plate whenever it was brought into the country, exempting him from any of those differences. The Jap spec B4's have a tinted rear garnish as standard. Not sure if he tinted it anymore....

That car pictured at the top of this thread was involved in a fairly nasty accident. Haven't heard much from the driver since the crash but I believe he was at fault and other motorist had reported him to the police. Highly doubtful his insurance would've paid out. And even if he was a good motorist, the tinted rear garnish might've caused some issues with insurance claims.

Check out this company:

http://www.lamin-x.com/

They have different shades / grades of tail light tint available... If you went the lightest one, I don't think anyone would bother you.

Actually thinking about getting the clear version for my front head lamps for protection.

Those products do look quite good. ill definately check out the pricing and such.
thinking of even doing the blue cover for the headlights. ..although that mite not look any good at all with my red lib.. ?? :- http://www.lamin-x.com/category-s/1214.htm :::check it out.
..perhaps the darker 'gunsmoke'. anyone know if that would be ok with ADRs?? ( https://www.lamin-x.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=1156 )
if not either of those, the tint one..

Why don't you try and buy some jdm legacy rear lights and garnish. Try some wreckers or www.importmonster.com.au
