ODB2 Monitoring tool

Postby teK-- » Sun Sep 06, 2009 10:48 am

I just found this on Fleabay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/WIRELESS-BLUETOOTH-OBD-2-OBD2-ODB-II-INTERFACE-SCANTOOL_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em63Q2el1177QQhashZitem563360f324QQitemZ370229179172QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools

It plugs into your ODB2 port and has a bluetooth transceiver.

You can then use this program: http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showthread.php?t=393427 to interface with the module on a Nokia Symbian based phone. With an N97 or 5800 and its huge 3.5" screen mounted in a car cradle, this seems to be a really cheap alternative to other products???

Had been pondering this for a little while - also for the fact of having a generic OBDII reader so I could access my mazda too... so I bit the bullet and bought the sender unit. $45AU delivered (offered $30US which was accepted) so will let people know in a fortnight if this works!

if not, oh well its only $45, no biggie.

Keen to see how it turns out Lee! I never got around to buying the sender.

Specifically though one thing I wanted to measure was oil pressure however then I found out there is no pressure sensor installed from factory. Also it may be a pain having this connected full time as then it prevents me from having the phone auto-pairing with my car kit.

If I am very dedicated in future I may just end up installing a regular oil pressure gauge in the cubby hole or something, and have a sandwich plate above the oil filter.

The keyword you would want is OBD. It stands for On Board Diagnostics and this is exclusive to cars post 1996 ;) OBDII is the current communication standard, but searching OBD should find you an app

http://hackaday.com/2008/09/27/use-rev- ... d-ii-port/

BUT also found this:

The OBD-II/EOBD information will be streamed via a wifi OBD-II adapter. Bluetooth would also be a viable solution, however Apple does not allow data transfer over the iPhone bluetooth and the iPod Touch does not have bluetooth.

So not good for you iphone users....

This is the official home for OBDScope http://obdscope.urli.net/

You need to sign the app before install but that's not a big deal.

Well the dongle arrived at my work today, but I had my SP23 today no the lib. BUT I tried it out on the way home, and yep, managed to connect to the ECU fine and had the following parameters available:

Engine Coolant Temperature (°C)
Intake Manifold Pressure (kPa(a))
Engine RPM (1/min)
Vehicle Speed (km/h)
Ignition Timing Advance for #1 Cylinder (°)
Intake Air Temperature (°C)
O2 Sensor Bank 1 - Sensor 1 (V)
O2 Sensor Bank 1 - Sensor 1 (%)
O2 Sensor Bank 1 - Sensor 2 (V)
O2 Sensor Bank 1 - Sensor 2 (%)
Commanded EGR (%)
Commanded Evaporative Purge (%)
Barometric Pressure (kPa(a))
Absolute Load Value (%)
Relative Throttle Position (%)
Fuel Economy (momentary) (l/100km)
Fuel Economy (momentary) (MPG)

plus a few more i can't think of now (didnt log them and can't see list unless ecu is connected)
No idea if this list will change for the Liberty (I imagine it may, depending on what Subaru coded to generic OBDII protocol) but pretty pleased that for $45 and a free phone app have all the above available ;)

my only gripe with the app is that the log file is in .csv, however it doesnt use commas! It uses ; instead, so I had to open the log in word, find/replace the ; with , then save it as a different file so I could open it properly in excel. So really it takes and extra minute to open the file, but for free, can't really complain! :D
