Steering wheel upgrade

Hello all,

New to forum and 2005 Liberty GT owner. Just wondering if I can use a later model steering wheel (or similar year) with the button cruise control vs the stock stalk on the side that is currently in the GT. Like to clean up the look without any fuss if possible. I believe 2005 is preface. The car already has an aftermarket headunit so media control is not important at all.

Thanks in advanced

Its been done. Member hardware bob iirc.
You can certainly get swc control regardless or blanks if required...
Alibaba vendor Mewant has good deals on diy stitch on steering wheel covers.
Even postfl steering wheels can be hard to find in mint condition.
Otherwise damd make nice 365mm d and o wheels from eg prospeedracing etc...
The ultimate setup being postfl d wheel, black swc’s, black my11-14 STi hornpad.
I have that with a prova wheel and, in use, a GR STi steering wheel. :good:

Yes, I have done this - check my build thread, it's not that hard.

Yes, you can swap in a later-model steering wheel with button-style cruise control, but there are a few things to consider. Since your 2005 Liberty GT (pre-facelift) originally comes with a stalk-style cruise control, switching to a wheel with integrated buttons may require additional wiring or module compatibility.

A good starting point is looking at 2006-2009 Liberty/Legacy steering wheels, as they have the button-style controls. You’ll want to check if the clock spring (spiral cable) supports the additional wiring for cruise control buttons. Some models may require repinning or an adapter harness to function correctly.

If you’re keeping your aftermarket head unit and don’t need media controls, you can focus purely on cruise control wiring. You might also need to reprogram or modify the ECU settings for proper functionality.

I’d recommend checking with someone who has done the swap before, or looking through wiring diagrams to ensure compatibility before making the switch.

Let us know what you find, and good luck with the mod!
