Run a Front Mount and a Top Mount??? (run a FMIC & TMIC??)

Postby jslayz » Sun Sep 29, 2013 10:43 pm

Hi all,

Just throwing it out there, could you put a front mount intercooler before your turbo and then use a TMIC after it??
Will there be enough advantage to compensate for the flow penalty???

What are the thoughts on this??

Waste of time, the air before the turbo will just be ambient temp (maybe marginally hotter due to engine bay temps). You can only cool it to ambient temp at best with an intercooler :P

The pre-turbo intercooler will actually be an interwarmer

what about two post-turbo intercoolers...run the front mount piping under the top mount, past the battery, then front core. then into the topmount....how'z thatttt :) ya get me

I dont agree at all.

Provide your scientific theory.

In my understanding it will still be providing some cooling.

The 'intercooler' metal would absorb heat from the engine bay (radiator or motor), it would then dump this heat on the air as it passes through it. Only slightly but you're still better off finding a cooler source of air and sending it straight to the intake :)

A water to air intercooler + front mounted intercooler would be the only scenario to make 2% of sense in this case...

any benefit in cooling would be negated by intake restriction, pressure drop, extra intake volume, longer pipe length, etc.

Forget it.

rotate the turbo so the outlet points towards the drivers strut tower
this will remove 3 bends and nearly a metre of un-needed piping

WTA + reservoir w/ radiators + fans is the winner if set up right.
Shortest inlet path post turbo.
Least heat soak potential.

You would be better off getting some Cryogenic sprays from my company setting up a pressure switch and spraying it on your intercooler
Some what illegal...

$$$ and extra weight.

Dollar for dollar a well thought out and appropriately sized FMIC is the best option.
very little heat-soak potential, remembering that when up to temp and AC on, the fans will be active a lot of the time

Gen4 has an engine bay that takes an FMIC very well, huge gap under the headlights gives direct access to a top-entry core

It comes down to room……

My car run’s 3 water to intercoolers, 1 unit fitted on either side of the valley, between the intake manifold and head and 1 across the front below the radiator.

I guess the advantage of running a water to air is that pipe doesn’t need to be large diameter as a TMIC or FMIC…… smaller diameter pipe ensures high water pressure which increases the flow rate.
Not a soobi anymore, but still slightly dirty

sounds like a diminishing return.....
Might investigate a wta pre cooler though..hmmm

Maybe make as much power as possible, then look at the intercooler system when it becomes a restricting factor? A well thought out front mounted intercooler should flow enough to handle some big big power.
