Postby Stewie1995 » Tue Jun 04, 2013 9:31 am

Hey lads,

I am wanting for put HID headlights in my libsta. Im looking at 55w 5000k H7 Xenon lights cause i want them to be whiter.
I am just confused on what is legal and illegal in NSW as its abit of a grey area law wise.
Thanks

you should be alright with 5000k ive got 6000k in my liberty and havent had any trouble with the law about them.

In terms of legality, if you want to retrofit HIDs they need to have auto-levellers and headlight washers (Euro compliance but subsequently accepted as an ADR).

If you have a post-facelift then you'd need to swap out the whole headlight to comply but wayyy too much $$$ and 99 times out of 100, provided you don't go something stupid like 8000K, you can get away with just swapping out the globes and fit an aftermarket ballast, which is what 99% of people on here do without fuss :)

IMO 35W for HIDs are more than sufficient; if they're anything like halogen globes in terms of heat then no need to go 55W as you don't want to melt your globe housing!

I'm running 35W 5000K HID lowbeams and they look very OEM due to our cars having projector lenses.

What Al said. 35w is more than substantial. I have 55w kits and the heat they create in my fog light housings is that bad that I've had one globe melt! I have 6000k HID kits and haven't had any issues with the constabulary, don't be obnoxious and fit anything higher.

Where are you getting this information about 4300k? I could find nothing in the ADR or from Vicroads. 4300k simply gives the best coverage for all weather conditions and is within the optimum lumen efficiency.

Maybe to do with the fact you can't have blue lights on your vehicle.. There definitely isn't anything about colour temps in any adr's tho..

As leo was educating me last night, ALL HID lights are illegal. however depending on the brightness and intensity of the light a cop may not care. if its not going to distract drivers or is an obvious colour you should be right. And you shouldnt be putting them in if your not willing to pay a fine.

If you retrofit them in projector lenses with headlight washers and self leveling they are not illegal.
