highbeamers

Postby JKeep2.5i » Wed Nov 02, 2011 5:15 pm

hey guys,
I've recently had HID's installed by leo on my low beams and foggies, both are 5000k. I live down wollongong and quite often drive down the coast so this sees me using my high beams at night a fair bit. The stock high beams i have on right now don't really stand out from the HID's so I'm wanting to upgrade :D
Im thinking going the 'philips diamond vision 5000k bulbs' i want to stay with halogens only cause turning off/on with HIDs isn't ideal, what i wanna know is what type of bulb is the high beam on my lib (h4, h7, etc??) and what wattage do i go for (55w 65w??)
whats your thoughts? thanks

I have high beam HID and it's great, the warm up time is really very minimal. You get the same if not more light from HID's for the initial switch on than you do the stock halogens, and then about 3 seconds later they are fully warmed up. Each time after that the full brightness is instantaneous, and of course heaps more than stock.
The legality of it shouldn't really come in to play either, as ideally nobody is supposed to see your high beams anyway.

I hope I explained that correctly, but a lot of people underestimate just how much light the highbeam HID puts out while they are still cold.

i dont underestimate the HID high beams at all, mainly i forgot to mention earlier was the price factor, comparing the two i know the HIDs are much better output of light, but right now as a first year apprentice still very much paying off my car mods are far and few between, any info on globes? :)

if for the hills in SA. imo stay with stock halogens, they are better just because once in awhile you will drive into fog and HIDs f*** you over. i had it done once to me and HIDs did crap all combine with 5000k normal halogens as high beams. all it did was just reflect off the mist and right after that i swap my high beams over to the factory halogens that came with the car (more yellow helps pierce through the fog really well).

im planning to get yellow fog lights just for the hills. we talking about 2000k or lower.

If in actual fact you do want to use them for the Hills (and in fog) like Tom said, the stock is still better the Phillips Diamond Vision. This is because scattering of the light is more apparent in short wavelength light. In order to penetrate the fog better, you want a light output with a long wavelength. The colour that gives the longest wavelength is red, however it cannot be used for fog lights as it is already used for brake lights. From red, the next best is green followed by yellow.

Since stock halogens are around 4300k and diamond vision is about 5000k, the wavelength of the stock is longer and therefore can penetrate the fog better. Also, with the diamond vision, since the color isnt produced by the gasses inside the bulb, but by a blue film on the glass of the bulb, light output is reduced and also the lifetime of the bulb is reduced.

Would 3,000 k HID's be better then?

For foggy situations, yes.

Its up to you dude. All im saying is that a colour with a longer wavelength will penetrate further in foggy situations. So its really up to you to choose a compromise between clarity in fog and color preference.

4300k is a pretty decent compromise as it will give decent clarity in fog and wont look too yellow.

I was always told that using high beams in fog made visibility worse rather than better, because the light will reflect back far more, regardless of what sort of colour temp the lights are.

Well I was thinking of doing just that, however I've been looking into these Phillips diamond vision globes have seen some on eBay for around $50, just for the ease to chuck them straight in, if I don't think they are good enough for what I want I can get some HIDs installed...

I'm not too worried about fog as high beams would be silly in fog, too much light scattered everywhere, that's what your fogs are for :P to light up under the fog..

And finally what globe size are the high beams on my MY04 lib, and what wattage?
Thanks :)

Leo only sells 35w, I run 55w in all my HId's as that's what the oem post facelifts are.
More expensive... But worth it.
